3 phase electric motor question

Is there less copper in the windings on a 3 phase motor then there is on a single phase motor?

I have a new surplus motor that I'm thinking about selling for scrap and someone told me that the copper weight on the armature will disappoint me.

The motor is a GE 75hp. cont. duty vertical. It's just enough of an oddball that I have not been able to sell it.

Thanks for any input.

In the September 2006 of "Electrical Apparatus" magazine, SEMCO at 800-541-1562 says:
"WANTED: VERTICAL HOLLOWSHAFT MOTORS 20 HP TO 500 HP GOOD OR BAD CONDITION SEMCO, INC"

You just havent found the right buyer.Look up industrial surplus sales magazines. Also fire sprinker fitter companies[Its a good size for jockey pump].Scrapping would be a waste and payout small.

It would seema shame to scrap your new motor. There are millions of vertical pump applications out there.Seems that possibly you have not advertized in the proper place.I have no idea where you are located but if near any coastal area you may find a buyer in the marine trade or as stated it would seem to be an ideal motor for irrigation.I feel sure that someone would just love to have your motor.Have you posted it for sale on this classified forum?Or contact some pump companies and include the name plate data in particular the frame number.

Ol Chief,

Hadn't given a thought to advertising it here on the classifieds. I'll need to get some photos of it.

I have been in touch with a bunch of pump suppliers all over. They all tell me if they find a need for it they'll give me a call. This motor is still bolted to the original shipping pallet from GE. They all liked hearing that, so I keep hoping to get a call.

We have all the data plate info, and have faxed a bunch of surplus sales folks too.

Thank you for the suggestions. I'll keep trying to get it sold.

Pretty good electric motor specsfor a three phase and excellent for a single phase. 85.5% efficiency and a power factor of 0.96 . Sure beats the $$$ of converting to a three phase service. There are some written pole single phase motors up to 100HP. >Link

>Link I hope they use 480 or 600V to keep the current lower and cable sizes smaller on the larger motors.

Most any farm with grain bins of any size has 15-18 hp blower motors all over. As well in the old days they made a 50hp single phase that ran grain driers. It would dim the whole neighborhood, as I hear.

Typically the armature (rotor) has just copper or aluminum bars, not turns. The stator has the windings. And a 3 phase could have less copper than a single phase, it will be sure to have a smaller core. But the 75 hp single phase motor is rare. Sounds like you have the perfect motor for an irrigation pump.

Thanks Gerald, The motor was a new replacement for a Peerless turbine pump. The pump was phased out and the motor was sold as surplus. I bought it hoping to find it a home. No luck so far. May have to scrap it, but that seems so wrong to do to something brand new!

If it is a modern motor there is NO NONE copper in the armature! All copper is in the stator windings the 3 and 1 is about the same for same size. But the largest 1 phase made is the 10 hp

when you list it give the frame NEMA frame number
that tells a lot like shaft size and more
