I have beautiful Ford 600 series 1955 tractor, but have steering problems. This steering wheel spins around several times without moving the wheel. Actually the steering wheel, itself, starts to rise out of its shaft. My question is, "What parts are probably shot; or would it be simplier to replace the whole steering unit? Would any tractor from 1954 to 1964 fit? Will an 8N, NAA(what actually is an NAA?), or a Jubilee steering box fit? Thanks for any advice.

Ditto what Jake said.. thrust bearings are gone.. top one for sure.. perhaps bottomone. If the seals leak and you don't replace them, at least ensure lube by pumping the steering box full of JD cornhead pourable grease. If the seals have any lip left on them the pourable grease will hold up pretty good.. it's real sticky.. but will eventually flow in to fill voids.. etc.

It"s a common problem caused by lack of lubrication. The top bearing is shot and easily replaced, the steering box is removed and steering column removed, the race removed and replaced, a new bearing inserted, the top race is ground into the steering shaft. It"s east to go through the whole box while you at it. Lubrication is the key because of the filler location. LOL
