Dodge 5.9 Cummins questions

I have a 99 Dodge with the cummins, it HAD a Edge EZ chip in it. A while back with the chip in it, it started "Check Engine light". I took it to a friend that scanned the codes and it had ""DTC detected in PCM" and "CKP signal error" codes. He advised I take the Edge chip off and see if it cleared. I did take the chip off. It was fine for a day but now it is back to CHECK ENGINE (with no chip, STOCK). WHen the truck acts up, it sputters, like coughs while running and sometimes the tach just stops working.

I am glad the trouble was not in the chip but I need to get it fixed, it is all I have for transportation and a work truck.

Any of you guys know what it could be, where to look? THANKS

TO ALL, THANKS. I replaced the Crank pos sensor and my truck is fixed, I put the chip back on and it is screaming and smoking like before and I love it. Also, eric, thanks for the DODGE website, I will look more into it. The diesel turbo registry sucks because you have to pay for any info of value there. THANKS GUYS.

I had the exact same thing happen.Changed the crank pos. sensor and it has worked fine ever since.In case you were wondering you need to remove the starter to get at it.

DTC = "diagnostic trouble code"

PCM = "powertrain contol module"... 'puter to us simple folks.

CKP = "crankshaft postion sensor problem"
