OTChevy truck tranny help

We have a '77 Chevy 3/4 ton pickup with a 4 speed transmission. It would only go in second gear. The shift lever plate screws have been removed but something is holding it and it can't be separated from the case. Any ideas on how to get it apart?

If it"s stuck in second, it may be that your shifter has jumped out of the socket it rides in. I had an "89 one ton that would do that. You could remove the shift lever by pressing down and rotating a ball at the base of the gear shift. It was then just a matter of setting the bottom of the gear shift back into the socket and re-locking the ball/ring. It was also an easy way to add gear oil. Pull the plug on the side of the tranny and add fluid through the shifter hole in the top until gear oil started to come out the fill hole in the side. Hope this helps.

First off have you removed the shift lever?? Also that plate has 2 dowels that line it up when you put it back on and they love to get rusty and then not let you pull it up. I have 3 of them laying are my place, one even has a tranfercase on it so if you need one maybe I can help

Are you talking removing the whole cover or just the shift lever ? To remove the trans cover on my 80 GMC 4 spd,you need to have the shift lever HALF WAY shifted into reverse to remove the cover. The cover can not be removed with the shifter in any other position.

Jon"s right about that having to be halfway into reverse for the reverse fork to clear the case. Same way when you reinstall the cover. Also in order to get the input and top shaft out you need to pull the bottom countershaft front and rear bearings. Lot"s a luck figureing out how to do that, it takes some blacksmithing and such to rig up pullers for those.
