Getting ready to purchase a 1/2 in. air impact gun. Use will be just general work in a home shop. What do you recommend as a good gun to buy, and what torque do i need? No heavy duty work is anticipated. Thanks for your help.

In my opion the only gun to get is the IR Thundergun. You can get them for $180 or so. I used a cheap gun for a few years. Then finally went out and bought the Thundergun. I could not believe the difference. Lug nuts on my truck that the cheap gun couldn't take off flew off and down the driveway seemingly under their own power. The rpms of these guns is extremly high. You have to throttle them down. I'm sure any good IR would do the trick but I really like the Thudergun. I tell everyone that asks to get it and they all love it.

Why air ? Unless you need heavy duty . I have just about parked all my air impact for all but the most stubborn nuts and blots. I have 4 battery impacts in 3/8ths and 1/2 that i use the heck out of . So much more handy than dragging air hose around . Specially for outside work . Down side $$$ Snap On is close to $300-400 depending on the model . My 18 volt will bust lugs nuts. They are cheaper makes out there, Harbor Freight has on efor $120 that is not a bad gun . I got my dad one and he loves it .

Myself i have and OLD CP 745 that will run the bag off anything that the boys in the tool wagons have tryed to pedal to me and i just tell them that if there new fancy high tech gun and out do this old dog then it will be time for a NEW GUN many have tryed and amny have failed to out perform that old 745 , She havs enough snort to just ring a 5/8th grade five bolt in half and it will sure put the wizzy on a 3/4 bolt or nut .

Call me stupid, but I would buy the biggest 1/2" impact I could afford to buy. You can always turn it down if it is too big for somethings, but you cannot get mroe torque when it is at its limit. I have 2 Macs, one is an Ingersol, the other is made in Ch**a, the Ingersol one is great, the Ch**a is not too bad. I also have an old CP that I would not trade for any new one. "pardon my language useing that C word"

I agree on the 231 IR the 244 is really an animal. I have a blue point that has been a good one ,stay away from CP

I use a chamble husefield one I got from wal-mart, its the heavy duty one costs was around $80 or so, it has been very good and the nice thing is they stand behind there tools. Only reason I know they stand behind there tools is because I have a preassure washer that the motor burn up in and they replaced it for free and the warrenty was long gone but they still gave me a new one with not one penny out of my pocket

John, Buy an IR and you`ll never have to buy another one. We used them in the tire store and ran them for 10hr a day 6 days a week with no care at all.(we oiled them every morning and could not keep the water out of the lines)After about two years we would wear out the anvails. BTW seend the money and get an extended anvail 231 kjm
