Rototiller works fine 'til the gas gets to 1/2 tank

Hi all,

I've got an old (mid-60s) 4 1/2 hp Briggs and Stratton powered rototiller handed down from my Dad. I use it about an hour a year, whether I need to or not.

This year it has developed a new quirck that I can't understand. It runs fine while the gas tank is full, and keeps running until it gets to just below 1/2 a tank, and then it basically quits. It'll start, turn a few times and then quit like it's out of gas. If I fill the tank up, runs fine again. Not a biggy, just a little annoying (not to mention, I hate things that defy me!) If it matters, it has a Vacu-jet carb. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks,
Tom

Hi all,

I have a 2.5hp B&S rototiller that someone broke the pull cord on. I have the part housing the pull gear (?) off but I can't see how I can re-install a pull cord.

Can anyone help me figure this out?

Thanks in advance.

Mary

I've had a problem with similar symptoms before. The answer was a partially clogged fuel line. Spray carburator cleaner solved it. Seems the weight of the full tank of gas forces enough fuel through the clog. As 1/2 the tank is used up, the force isn't adequate, and the engine is starved...at least, that is what happened to my machine...

Does this briggs have a gas tank about 6" tall with the carb fastened right on top? If you take the carb off of the tank there should be 2 brass tubes that stick down into the tank, one is longer than the other. Sounds like the long one is broken or missing.

Joe is right. One more thing, that long pickup is two pieces joined, guess where, at the half tank level. Just went through this with my son's freebie little 3HP B&S go kart.

You might try replacing the diaphragm in the carburetor. The smallest pin-hole in the diaphragm Vacu-jet will cause it to not pump gas properly into the fuel cup inside the tank. (The fuel cup functions like the float and needle valve in a regular carburetor.) Anyway the diaphragm is cheap - only a couple of bucks - and can be replaced in a couple minutes with just a screwdriver.

Hi Tom - I'm only a shade tree mechanic however my first guess is that as you use the gas out of the tank there is a vacumn created. In other words an equal volume of air must enter the tank as you burn it out by running the engine. I would suggest you check the gas tank cap cover and make sure the little air vent hole is open.
