Question on Acetylene torch regulator

I was heating up a frozen nut this evening, and shortly after I shut off the valves on the torch head I heard a pop in the regulator, followed by a hissing sound. It was coming from what looks like a safety or bleeder valve on the bottom of the oxygen regulator body, so I assume that the diaphragm in the regulator has ruptured. True? If so, can I buy replacement diaphragm membranes and rebuild the regulators myself, or is this best left to a professional? Also, why is there this "bleeder" valve on the oxygen regulator and not the acetylene regulator? Torch and regulators are Victor Junior. Thanks for any replies!

Well, I took the regulator apart and found that a very small white (teflon) O-ring had broken in the seat of the regulator. Went to a rebuild shop to get the part, and as pointed out in a couple posts, they couldn't sell me the repair kit due to liability issues. So I let them repair the regulator while I watched. Took the guy 10 minutes, cost me $39, and I didn't see anything magic or any special tools required. FYI, rebuild kits are available all over the Internet.

That part was in my kit also.So you paid nine bucks labor.Not a bad deal.I saw the used parts in my toolbox last night and the bag said Victor so I got original parts. I think my only tool was large adjustable to open the gauge.Good to hear yours is now fixed.Good luck.

My Victor was creeping and I got the rebuild kit with diaphram from info on the web.Google guage repair[I think]There was a liability issue the guy said I was supposed to sign a waiver but since I called in my credit card by phone I guess he waived the waiver.If you can rebuild a carb you can do your guage.Mine turned out to be a bad seat, diaphram was fine but, I put in all the new parts in the kit in anyhow and saved the old diaphram.All the local guage guys have long retired.Kit was about 30 bucks I think.Good luck check your work so you dont blow up your house.[Not trying to be funny]

I don't even think you can buy the parts to repair the regulators on welding equipment...someting to do with liability....the parts place wants none of it with a diy repair on a O2 regulator,that they sold parts for,and were installed improperly, and were sued for selling to a uncertifed/licenced repair facility....lawers,you got to love 'em

Hi ebbsspeed,

At a guess I'd say that the oxygen regulator might have a safety relief device that the acetylene regulator wouldn't need because the oxygen tank pressure is 8 to 10 times the acetylene tank pressure.

Dito... In some cases you may be able to buy a new set for about the same price as rebulding both of your old units. Dosen't hurt to check.

Yep-best to have a professional shop rebuild the regulators. they have the necessary tools and experience to do that job, and you'll be most likely to have a problem doing it yerself!

Sounds like you need some flashback arrestors bud.

If you have some then you need to change them.
