Another Flourescent Light Problem

Reading the post below reminded me of a little problem I have in my shop. The flourescent lights don't really make a buzz sound that I hear, but my radio picks up static that sounds like buzzing and goes away when I turn off the flourescent lights on the same circuit as the radio. It's a problem on just that one circuit because on a different circuit that also has flourescent lights on it, the radio sounds OK. What causes the static?

Pete

Reading your post, I"m assuming that the radio is powered from the AC line. If so, have you tried a battery-powered radio? If you still get the interference, then we"ve eliminated the power line as a source--the noise then would be an RF hash that"s being picked up by the antenna or worse yet thru the radio case and directly by an IF stage.

Radio Shack"s line filters--IF they even still sell one--weren"t very good. A better line filter can be found in any ARRL Radio Amateurs Handbook or Google "brute force line filter" for a good circuit. A line filter will do nothing if the interference is coming in through the antenna.

If you receive the interference on a battery powered receiver, then use it to try to track down the offending light fixture. You should be able to track down a suspect.

I agree this is an old time problem that sometimes takes a variety of cures for the problem. I usually find it is the tubes that cause the problem. Usually have to replace both in a dual fixture to cure the problem. Also if the fixture does not have a good ground will cause a problem. Poor electical contact at the sockets is another source of noise. Seldom is it the ballast and filters are usually ineffective. Swap bulbs from the non noisey fixture with the noisey fixture and see if the trouble swaps.

A line filter for the radio supply cord might help. Try Radio Shack.

That buzz in the radio has been a problem around fluorescent lamps all their life. Some ballasts have a capacitor to cut down on the radio noise, some don't. Old lamps can sometimes make the noise worse. You may have to run the radio only on the quiet circuit, or disconnect one ballast at a time to identify the noisy one (hoping its only one) and then try a capacitor from black to white (probably something like a .01 mfd at 1600 volts rated for line voltage applications) or first replace the lamps to see if the noise is improved.

It may take replacing ballast, lamps, and sockets to get the fixture radio quiet.
