Finally got the lug nut off by drilling and using cold chiesel. It took a lot of patience and perseverance. Also had to go to 5 auto parts stores to get the wheel stud. Thanks everyone for the help.

I had one frozen into an aluminum rim. Tire dealer's mechanic kept driving smaller and smaller sockets on the nut, and each would strip off the corners of the nut. Finally took the vehicle home and drilled out the wheel stud. Started with a small drill, and managed to get the hole very close to center on the stud. Then took succesively larger drills and drilled it out until I could get the nut and stud off. Like the fellow below, I had to go to a couple stores to get the proper replacement stud. Now all my wheel studs and nuts are lubricated with white lithium grease to prevent siezing. I make sure the tapered part of the nut is lubricated where it seats on the rim too. (I know that some manufacturers do not recommend greasing the lug nuts, and I'll probably get burned by some for doing this. But when wife is out some nite in the middle of nowhere with a frozen lugnut, ...) Yes, I torque the lugnuts carefully to specs!

Roger,
Glad you got that behind you.

Ray,
I'm with you on greasing the lug nuts. I also oil the back of the wheel so it won't be stuck to the hub when I have to take it off.

Hi Rodger,

What's the method of attachment of a wheel stud? I've never had to replace one so I've never given any thought to how they attach to the wheel.

All the best, Stan

P.S. Thanks for telling us how it turned out. It would be nice if everyone did so---purely voluntarily, or course. Sometimes it's even a bit of a letdown when you get real involved in someone's interesting problem, and then they don't say anything else about it and you never get to know how it turned out.

Stan,
I agree.Alot of the people asking for advise or tech help are never heard from again.
It's voluntary like you said, but only common courtesy to keep the helping folks updated. ~brad

Hi Stan,
The stud has a splined area between the threads and the head that has to be pressed or driven into the holes in the hub. Butch
