In my area the old style 20 lb propane tanks are being dumped, anyone have a good use for these tanks or are they just junk? I do know the valves can be replaced and used for propane but I am looking for a reason to keep some for uses other than propane. Thanks.

Cut it in half at the seam and make a nice round hole of 1 to 3 inches in diameter in the bottom of the bottom half (easier then the top). Weld in a matching heavy wall tube of whatever length you need and you have a bullet proof funnel. Mine has a 3" OD tube X 4" long and I use it to empty a camping toilet into the 4" house sewer system. The sewer pipe was extended thru the foundation wall and terminated in a vertical section with a cap.

Here in Okla if you paint TORCH on it they will refill it. Or if you have a liquid line on your house tank you can refill them yourself. I refill the 1# tanks with my 20#.

I also made a charcoal grill out of one that bad. I did fill with water first and used my 4 1/2 cut off to cut it in half.

All in what you can think up as to what you might do with them, I can't seem to throw anything away. never know what i might need it for.

Last I knew, Home Depot and others were accepting them as exchange for the new style. If memory serves, 20 bucks and your old tank got you a full tank with the opd.

I fill them with water for a few days, empty them out, weld on a clevis, paint them a bright color and use them for marker bouys at the cottage. At on time we used javex bottles to mark anchor chains but people would shoot holes in them or run them over with snowmobiles on the ice. Next spring we would be fishing for the anchor chain. I gave one to a neighbour and it has been in use all year for over 10 years now.

I remember on a Mythbuster program they used several to make an electrical generator wheel for free power. Don't recall what the outcome was.

It worked, but produced nothing useful that amounted to anything.

They can be used for compressed air tank - with proper caution for getting them empty & all, screw in an air adaptor.

I was told that people such as contractors can get the cylinders with the old style valves refilled. That only your average citizen is required to have the new style valve.

Depends where you live. Who you are doesn't make the person filling the tank any wiser. Not all states enforce it, in fact it is only a National Fire Protection Agency "Code" for now and the dealers are encouraged to enforce. I know someone in propane who would fill mine but I scrapped it. Tell you what, if something happened while transporting it (vehicle accident) and it erupted I bet the valve would be the first thing to be scrutinized.
