O/T Kenmore washing machine

I have my 25 year old Kenmore commercial top loader washing machine I bought new (but hey it washes my tractor clothes faithfully). Anyway yesterday It started filling with water to the normal level, then it starts pumping back out down to about half way then fills back up and pumps back out. It would probably continue doing this if I did not shut it off. No other cycle starts. It seems to do this no matter where the cycle dial (timer dial) is set. Any Ideas?

Hi Steve,

Take the back off to access the controls. You will see a round egg shaped control with a tube to the back of it and two wires. This is the tub level sensing control.

As the tub fills, a small amount of air pressure is applied to the switch diaphram. When the tub is full then the switch action completes a series circuit to the control timer.

Since your machine is 25yrs old, I would bet the hose has a small leak or crack draining off the pressure.

Or the switch it self is bad, (doubtful).

Or both!

If the machine has been moved lately on it's side then it may have water in the diaphram. Bake the control at 250� for a couple hours and clean out the water in the tube, thus resetting the control. The control will more than likely need to be replaced.

Sounds like some where in the timer that a set of points are sticking or welded them selfs up. Bad thing it to replace a timer will probably cost you nore then what its worth any more. BTDT
