I am considering purchasing a 40 lb central pneumatic pressure blaster from harbour freight. I have a DeVilbiss 6.5 hp 60 gal single stage compressor, 10-13cfm and was wondering if it would do the job on small to medium parts/castings. I plan to farm out the larger blasting jobs. Any input from anyone with experience with this type of unit would be greatly appreciated.

I own the same 40lb pressure blaster from harbour freight. It is ok, but the shut off valve doesnt work anymore. It uses plain old ball and cock valves which I don't think were ever meant for sandblasters, and don't live long. I am considering dishing out the extra dough for a nice blaster from eastwood or a similar company. Plus the hood supplied with the kit was pretty sorry, if I remember right it was too foggy to comfortably use after the first tank of sand. On the other hand though, its a whole lot cheaper than the other pressure blasters. If you only need it temporarily you will probably be satisfied, but if you plan on having it around for a long time, buy the nicer units. Hope this helps

Sorry to answer your question I have found most single stage compressors to be inadequate for all but the smallest parts. Why not take all your parts at one time to the blaster. His charge is less that the cost of the equiptment. $300 for the blaster? $500+ for the respirator.....

might i suggest the deluxe head cover that northern hydraulic offers i think its $49. made of leather with sealed glass lense. much better that harbor freight cheap model. if you have never done blasting before, take my work for it. you'll need the head cover, good mask, coveralls with rubber bands at the sleeves and at boots.

ALL blasting requires a positive air respiration system with it's own air supply!!! DO NOT USE silica sand!!!! I found a product called Black Diamond that uses slag from power generating stations that use coal. It is much safer and not that much more expensive. Do a search for Foster Dixiana. Silicosis has turned out to be a much more dangerous disease than anyone thought. Please be safe and use the PROPER safety equipment. Believe me I used to use just a hood and dust mask!

I use the Harbor Freight 40 lb blaster with a 5 HP 60 gallon tank, runs fine, especially if only doing small to medium sized parts. Even larger parts are OK, just have to fill the blaster once in a while which isn't a big deal because the compressor shouldn't run 100% of time for long periods anyway.
