I had one for about 5 or 6 years. I just sold it a few months ago. I did have trouble keeping the belt tight enough to drill steel. Also had trouble with not being able to slow it down enough for steel. The chuck would fall out of the spindle if there was any vibration at all when drilling. Ended up having to use red Locktite to keep it on.

It was OK for light drilling, but it wasn't enough for my needs so I sold it and bought a much bigger drill press. I don't know how much you need. Mine was rated for 1/2 inch hole in steel, but don't expect it to work too well for that. 3/8 dia in steel is about the practical limit.

Maybe I just expected more from it than I should have.

Assume that it is the DP 300 you are considering. I have used mine without problems for a couple of years. My only complaint would be that it does not go slower (RPM). Paid about $200 Canadian at Home Depot. Be sure to consider the reviews on the link below:

I'm through buying Delta tools. I have a small Delta drill press and a bench grinder. Both have been used very little. The starters have burned up in both of them. I called Delta about getting one for the drill press and they will sell me a new motor only. I'm stuck with 2 Delta products that I can't use without paying almost as much as they cost initially. Just my 2 cents worth.

Bill, that sounds like the motor on my Craftsman Sander It doesn.t have a centrifical
start switch in the motor, It has a relay and capacitor in the motor base which I got from Sears PARTS for $30 for both.

Good for you. I think mine is just a capacitor, but delta wouldn't sell me one, they just replace the motor as a unit. I may be able to find a couple of them if i'm ever in the right place at the right time.
