Problem using high freq unit with buzz box

I have been using a high freq unit from an old Linde 305 welder on a Lincoln 225 amp buzz box for several years to tig weld aluminium with no problems. Recently, when I was welding and stopped, I saw a flash from inside the welder & it sounded like striking an arc. I took the cover off & checked for arcing & it looks like it arced from the outside flat winding to the transformer core near the bottom. Later, after blowing out any dirt I could find and checking for shorts, I powered it up again and welded with stick & it worked fine. I used another 225 buzz box to finish the aluminium item I was welding.
When I went to weld another item, this second welder exhibited a similar problem with arcing.

My questions: 1. Is there possibly a problem with my High freq unit?
2. Are the Lincoln buzz boxes maybe not insulated well enough to use the high frq unit?
3. Was it maybe just the dirt that had accumulated around the transformer that caused the problem?
4. Has anyone else had a similar problem?

I've use the little Century unit for several years on a Lincoln tombstone A/C-D/C welder to weld aluminum. The only problem I have is exceeding the duty cycle and the unit shutting down till it cools off. I also used it on an old Sureweld buzzbox without any problems. And a 1949 Fourney 180amp buzzbox for a long time.
Back in the early 80's I had a Hobart high freq unit that would jump a 6" arc that I also used on this old Fourney. Most of the time I used a Miller HF15 with a Miller AEAD 200 LE engine drive portable or the Hobart on a 200amp Sureweld engine drive straight A/C portable from the mid 60's.

There shouldn't be any HF on the welder unless it's hooked up wrong. HF would certainly arc across the dust in the bottom of your welder.

I bought a new Century arc frequency stabilizer several years ago to do essensally the same as you are doing. I never stuck an arc with it before I talked with a few of the guys from the welding supply co that I deal with. They advised me not to try and use that unit except on a newer high quality welder. No old ones and especially a buzz box. These are not insulated well enough to handle the frequency which will apparently feed back into the welder and arc through sub-standard insulation. I had to bite the bullet and go to an upper cut welder (Miller Syncro-wave in my case) to do the work I needed to do without burning something out. The Syncro already has stabilized frequency especially for DC staight polarity for TIG on stainless. And the AC stabilized from this welder can't be beat on aluminum.
I sold the stabilizer as used but never used on fleabay with the caution about what welders would work.
