Changing a Dewalt Drill Chuck

I have a 14.4v 3/8 dewalt cordless drill-probably 5-6 years old. Great drill but the chuck has finally worn out and broken.

I bought a new 3/8 craftsman chuck but can't figure out how to get the old one off. I thought you just opened the chuck all the way and there was supposed to be a screw or hex bolt in the bottom-but I don't see anything like that.

Anyone have any experience changing a DeWalt chuck-any tips?

It is usually a standard 1/2"-20 thread with a left hand screw through it.

If the other mentioned methods don't work I have had some success with cutting the old chuck off with a dremel tool and cutoff disk. Had to do that when upgrading to a 1/2" chuck. Just go slow and be careful.

From the Dewalt site:

Please follow these instructions to remove a chuck:

Most reversing drills have a left-handed screw inside the chuck. If the unit has a screw, follow all three steps below. If the unit doesn't have the screw, use only step three.

1) Place the chuck key into one of the holes in the chuck on the right side. With the chuck facing toward you, strike the key in a clock-wise direction with a wooden mallet or similar object. This will loosen the screw inside the chuck.

2) Open the chuck jaws fully. Insert a screwdriver into the front of the chuck between the jaws to engage the screw head. Remove the screw by turning clockwise (left-hand screw).

3) Place the key in the chuck again. With the chuck facing toward you, place the key on the left side of the chuck. Using a wooden mallet or similar object, strike the key sharply in a counter-clockwise direction. This will loosen the chuck so it may be unscrewed by hand.

Instructions for removing a keyless chuck:

Remove the left-hand threaded screw if necessary (steps 1 and 2).
Insert a 1/4" hex key or larger short end into the chuck and tighten. Facing the tool, strike the long end of the hex wrench sharply counter-clockwise, as it's a standard thread.
There is no way to stop the motor from turning, so it may require several revolutions to loosen the chuck.

"strike the long end of the hex wrench sharply"

Well if it's like the one I did, have someone hold the drill on a bench, get a big hammer, and hit it as hard as you can! It did NOT want to break loose, but eventually did.
