Has anyone bought one of these house backup generaters in the 15000 kw size. They sell them at Home Depot in my area. Any comments on them would be appreciated. They run about $3500.00 in this area of Vermont. Thanks for any input. Dick in Vermont.

My neighbor has one, about $3,500. I dont know if its worth it or not, The cost, the fuel to run it, repairs, and the power only goes out a few times a year for more then 15 minutes. Most power outages here are for 2 minutes. I have a 10HP portable that will run my well, and 2 120VAC circuits.

You would be making a great investment. I recently purchased a 12k generac at home depot. It "excercises" for 12 min. each week and when the power goes out it will take exactly 20 sec. for the generator to fire up and exactly 10 secs. later you have full power again. Like others, I have powered my whole house and also use a little common sense not to run everything at once. Like you, we live in the same type of climate in western N.Y. and are subject to many power outages. Since we burn coal in a zoned boiler, after 3 minutes the fire will go out and must be restarted. Ahh...peace of mind having a standby generator.

We have had one at work for four months now. So far no problem. Transfer switch had some parts missing when we got it, but local dealer replaced them. A lot more compact than our last gen.

We have had one for about 2 years now, and I wouldn't be without it, or I should say that my wife wouldn't be without it since my work requires me to be away from home a lot. The unit starts on its own once a week, runs for 15-20 minutes, and then shuts down. When the power goes off, you set in the dark for maybe 10 seconds and then you hear the generator start, wait another 15-20 seconds and the lights come back on. When the power company restores the electricity, the only way you know it is that the generator shuts down, you don't even see the lights flicker. We have ours hooked to a 100 gallon tank, which was barely adequate last year when we lost the the electicity for about 40 hours, so they aren't cheap to run. But for the peace of mind, priceless. I have the entire house hooked to the unit, not just the priority circuits like they are designed to be connected, and never have had a problem. Of course we don't turn on the oven, the dryer, and everything else all at once, but use a little common sense and you should be all set. So my final advice, put it in, you won't regret it

Sounds like you have your priorities right. I have a couple of arctic cat snowmobiles that I blew about $12,000 dollars on that probably dont give me as much satisfaction one of those standby generators would! At least I am sure the five times I lost power this summer I would have liked to have one. Sounds good. Later.
