how hard to do a cyclinder rebuild?

Have a kelley front end loader and was told the one cyclinder on the bucket might be leaking in the inner seals. How hard is it to check and how to do it? any thoughts/comments would be appreciated...thanks jeff

Hi Jeff,

Like old said you need to keep them clean.

Don't rebuild just one side of a two cylinder lift as then the older working side will be the weak side.

Pay close attention to how the seals face. On double acting cylinders you should have one set of seals facing one way and the other set facing the opposite way on the pistion.

Odd seals that can't be bought can be made from leather.

I found using a piston ring compressor along with alot of oil on the new seals really helps the seals slip easy into the bore.

On a few of my cylinder bores were rusty at the bottom of the bore. I made a extension for my cyclinder hone then used a excessive amount of oil to clean the bores up using a 1/2" drill motor.

I might add, it is a lot easier to slip the seals over the ram if you heat them in cooking oil and then slip them into the groves.

Some cylinders are easy to rebuild and others are just plain a pain in the butt to do. That said clean, clean, clean is the key to doing them and take your time and when you take it apart make sure you look close at how all parts lay and which way they lay. Get one seal in back words and its toast. Also never just rebuild one cylinder, they wear at the same rate and if one is causeing problems the other one will soon after if you don;t rebuild them both. BTDT and it was a pain just this past summer

single cyclinder setup, but it's probably going to be a winter job.

I could probably do it in less then and hour but I have also done say 20 or more of them. Just as I said when you open it up make sure of how every thing is and put it back the same way. Had one thing summer I could get right and found out the place we got the parts from where giveing use the wrong part which cost use $50 till we figured it out
