Wally World carries a PH booster by Aqua Chem called pH add(+) that is pure anhydrous sodium carbonate and not the hydrated form that is in washing soda; the ph booster works better than washing soda for the same amount used as the crystals are smaller.

go the the Arm and Hammer web site and they have an on line locator of stores that sell their product. By zip code, I think.

Red Devil Lye is available in even the dinkiest grocery store, over with the laundry soaps and/or the toilet cleaners / drain openers.

Yes, lye is sodium hydroxide, not sodium carbonate. Yes, lye is caustic and has to be handled more carefully. But you don't need a strong solution; a third of a box of lye, 3 or 5 gallons of water, a chunk of rebar, and a battery charger and you can be electrolyzing away. I personally don't bother with the washing soda bit.

Most any decent-sized super market or Wally World will carry washing soda. Also, pool stores carry calcium carbonate for PH adjustment in pools. I've also used Oxy Magic laundry detergent, which is mostly calcium carbonate. Just check the ingredients list, and I'll bet several other similar products are have similar makeups.

Remind me not to type while tired! Washing soda is SODIUM carbonate, not CALCIUM carbonate, (and as differentiated from baking soda, which is sodium BIcarbonate). Oxy Magic, which is a Clorox product, has sodium carbonate in it, and I've used it before when I couldn't find washing soda.

I found it in a Wegman"s grocery store in the cleaning products aisle on one of my trips back to NY. Hopefully you have one in your area. I used to live in NY and moved to NC. I wish we had Wegman"s here...

Hey Ribbit,
I'm originally from Dansville. Is your handle something to do with drag racing?
