8 volt vs 6 volt battery

I was talking to a guy the other day at an auction and explaining to him that my Farmall H did not turn over very fast with a fresh 6 volt battery. He suggested putting in an 8 volt. I have never heard of this before. He runs one in his H and "it works great". Is this realistic and how does the 6 volt system charge the 8 volt? Maybe, he was just trying to snow me! What do you guys think? Matt

Why don't you just get your starter rebuilt. Just had one rebuilt for an 8N for 70.00.

Matt, Something over 30 years ago ,I was working on an AG-6 cletrac that was slow or almost no crank .I
had cleaned and shined all the connections both
hot and ground ,put brushes , bushings and new
armature in it and still no better. I was on the
way to a starter rebuilder with some other ones,
so I took it along, the owner of the shop looked
at the starter and said - that starter will spin
any engine that it is designed to bolt on. I dont't know for sure what he did , but when I put
it back on the crawler it would spin that engine
at or better than idle speed. It cost 12 dollars
to fix . I think he set the brush timing but I'm
not sure. It was a 6 volt system , and still cranks well .

The parts to convert to 12 volt are very inexpensive. Gotta wonder why folks wouldn't want to skip the whole 6 or 8 dilemma, not to mention those dumb old generators, and go straight to an internally regulated alternator with a $40 battery. Unless you're trying to keep it pure stock for the show circuit, in which case money is no object.

To chime in on what John T. said...

My MH-44 didn't start worth a darn. Then I got rid of the Wal-mart battery cables and bolt on cable ends for a good set of 00 gauge cables and it starts like a new one.

Matt, assuming all other things equal, its true an 8 volt battery would indeed make the starter crank faster. However, Im NOT a fan of the 8 volt system and view it as a band aid approach to mask the real problem and since a lil H ought to start okay with the standard and original 6 volt system provided alllll ll is in good condition.

As far as charging, if your charging system is the simple 2 wire cutout relay it ought to still work and if its a Voltage Regulator with Current Regulation but not Voltage Regulation it ought to still work, but if its one of those 3 coil VR's that has independant Voltage Regulation it may need to be adjusted n tweaked up some for better charging. If the genny is a 3 brush adjustable unit I would set its third brush to the max charge position also.

At 8 volts the lights will glow brighter but burn out sooner and likewise, the points will not last quite as long plus the coil (if a battery powered coil ignition) could run a tad on the warm side unless some external ballasting were used.

On 6 volt systems I recommend the heaviest duty highest rated battery that will physically fit in the compartment plus the use of 00 Gauge Battery n Starter n Ground Cables and if the starter is in good shape, that combination ought to start a lil H just fine if it and the ignition are in decent shape at all.

Its your tractor and your choice so best wishes n let us know.

I have installed a number of 8 volt batteries in place of 6 volts and they have worked good. You may have to adjust the voltage regulator for higher output. You will need about 9 volt output.

I use the 8 volt on all my 6 volt tractors. They charge fine and turn over much better.
