Number 1 and Number 2 Copper

I was taking cans off today and while I was there
I saw (again) the sign that listed the prices for
aluminum and number 1 copper and number 2 copper.
I asked the guy what is the difference in 1 and 2.
He told me solid electric wire, from about 16 guage on
down, stripped of all insulation and clean, was number 1.
And clean copper pipe was number 1.
Stranded wire was number 2, and basically all other copper.

I been curious about this since I first saw that sign.
Thought some of ya'll mite want to know too.

sheet copper is a different price than #1 and# 2. other than that # 1 is 14 gauge or bigger and no solder paint or corrosion but it all depend on who they sell it to . whitey

If a guy told me stripped stranded bare copper was not paying number one then I would go elsewhere.All sizes are stranded after about number 8 anyway.Once I had a guy tell me my wire scrap was number two because it was tarnished.I pulled it all off the scale and went down the block to the next guy and got number one price.Ive been going to the second guy ever since.I read in the paper today 19 thousand dollars worth of copper was just stolen from a Chilies restaurant jobsite and theft is way up all over.

A while back when copper was $3/pound
someone broke into the power substation for our town
and stole all the copper grounding wires.
They got about 100 pounds of copper.
The theft wasn't discovered until something went wrong
and the equipment which should have been grounded wasn't.
Power was out for most of the day while they fixed it.
Someone could have been electrocuted for $300.
Stupid, stupid people.

Yes, they will Downgrade copper, to # 2, if the get the chance. Last run I made to the scrapyard, I had sorted copper into 2 boxes. One dirty, the other was nice shiny scraps of bars & sheet. I had to argue to get them to give #1 price for the clean box...

Generally if it is "clean" and bright looking and larger than #14 awg then it is #1 copper? Pipe has to be free of solder, paint, or heavy corrosion to be classified as #1 copper.. All other copper that is contaminated with corrosion or paint is #2 copper as well as pipe with joints still soldered on.....

So another way to look at it is #1 is pure copper thick enough to melt rather than burn up; while #2 is the fine shavings or contaminated stuff.
