I am looking for a good 1/2" drive impact that has at least 400 ft./lbs. of torque. what is the best gun for the price? Ingersoll Rand? Craftsman, Snap-On, etc? I have had a craftsman before but it didn't last too long. I was wondering what has worked best for yall for the price, and also what I should expect to pay for a decent one. Thanks.

Been using Snap-on and I-R both. Recomend the I-R 2131 price and reliability, its also very light and powerful. The Snap-On 6100 is a very powerful, but seems to be a short life wrench. Costs about 300$ I-R 2131 is around 180$

Joe, I'm a mechanic in a dealership and I wouldn't buy an I-R, they make a lot of noise and break frequently, but don't have the real guts you'll probably need. I've owned 3 half-inch impact guns in my last 28 years, use them every day, frequently and hard, and they've all been CP (Chicago Pneumatic). The first one I bought used (no money), it went 8 years, the second one is now at work in my home shop since I got a compressor here, it has been at it for 20 years so far. The newest one is only 2 years old, will outpull any gun in our 10-man shop. It's a model 734H,cost me $134 Canadian -about $90 US, not noisy, but it amazes everyone who has to borrow it to take off a crank nut. We run at 130 psi in the shop, so nothing super for pressure. My 2 cents worth, Ron

Ron, This is curious, have worked in a shop over 25 years. Am on third Ingersoll Rand 1/2 in. impact, 231, always been very pleased with them. Used to use the Chicago Pneumatic 734, liked them too, but their quality seemed to go down when their manufacturing left north america. Noisy? The new super Snap-on guns, are a lot noisier, powerful yes, but when they break, Snap-on can't get em back with in a month. We run 130 -140 psi in the shop too. John

John Ne - This is kind of like ford/chev/dodge, but you gotta go with what works well for you. I haven't noticed a difference in domestic/import quality and the "H" model has a different type of hammer design, doesn't sound like it's working hard, but things just come off. The guy who works next to me can rattle away at something with his new I-R for almost a minute, then I put the socket on mine and it comes off like a wheel nut using his air line - it's that "more power " feeling !

Ron, I won't even touch that ford/chevy/dodge bit after the fur that has flew in here earlier, but on the impact wrenches, a guy uses what works for him, and if I see my neighbor using something different, might just borrow it a bit to see if its better, just like any tool, use what is comfortable, does the job, and try to get the best deal possible. thanks, John, Nebr.

Hi Joe,
I am in agreement about the IR2131. Craftsman actually sells the IR gun with it's name on it. I bought mine new on ebay for $125. It is very nice. I have seen them often on ebay. Get one, you'll love it. Bill

I have an older I-R 231, it is easlily the best one I have seen. Harbor Freight had them on sale a month or 2 ago for $129, they are usually $150-$170.

I've been VERY pleased with my I-R stuff. Hard to beat for the price, I should think.

I've been around a lot of I-R 2131 wrenches. And wouldn't invest in anything else out there. Twin hammer design with a lot quieter muffler.

Remember that the IR impact wrenches were designed to operate off 90 PSI. This is typical for most shops and the wrench was built to perform at this pressure. More air will create problems. I worked for the company for 12 years.

While IR, CP, and bluepoint are all fine impact wrenches, most of the time, I wouldn't even consider buying anything but husky. All of home depot's air tools are guaranteed for life. This includes commercial use. And they hold up very well. Don't offer quite the strength IR or CP offers, but still very strong. Wouldn't use a housebrand like northern or craftsman, but you can't beat HD's warranty.
