Came across a Homelite 360 chain saw about a 1980 model. Would like to know the proper oil to gas ratio.
Thanks
Bob

we use stihl oil, mixed according to the bottle and run it in all brands of air cooled 2 strokes. the marine engines are water cooled and only turn up about 4500rpm's , so marine oil isnt good enough for the air cooled engines turning 10,000+ rpms. lucas

Use oil that says chainsaw use on the label. Chain saws run much hotter than outboard motors. Use premium fuel. More pistons have been melted or scored via detonation than from the lack of lubrication.

I read the comments made by other contributors about not using outboard motor oil in a chain saw and wondered if I had been using outboard motor oil when I should have been using something else better suited in my chainsaw.

Roger Pennski and his team of experts at Pennzoil seem to believe that their outboard oil is as good as any in my chainsaw. The Pennzoil bottle that the outboard motor oil came in indicated that the oil is approved where NMMA TC-W, TC-WII or TC-W3 is recommended. It went on to say that it is A high performance 2-cycle engine oil exceeding the warranty requirements of all leading manufacturers of 2-cycle products including chain saws, lawn mowers, motorcycles, string trimmers, as well as outboard engines made by Johnson / Evinrude, Mercury Marine, Yamaha, Suzuki, Nissan, Force / US marine, Mariner, Sears and all other manufacturers requiring TC-W3 oil.

So it appears that outboard engine oil is good for chainsaws too.

Why do other two stroke oil oil manufactures go to the expense and bother of marketing two or three types of application specific lub?

Probably called for 32:1 mix. I would use the little 50:1 bottles for 1 gallon which contain 2.6 OZ to achieve 50:1 when mixed with one gallon of gas (128 oz.). Just fill the can with 0.87 gal instead of a whole gallon. This will give you about 40:1 mix with high quality oil, I use Stihl. Tom

I have a 330 that uses 32:1. friend of mine used the outboard oil and it ran really hot. I use the saw oils personally.

Don't use outboard oil in air cooled 2strokes. Not good for them.

Older two cycle engines used a richer oil mix because the oils of the day were not as good as today's two cycle oils.. I use 50-1 with good modern two stroke oil.

I alwayd use Stihl 50:1 mix in anything 2-cycle. Been doing this for years and never had a problem.

My Homelite 360-SL Owners Manual says that it uses either 32:1 SAE-40 or 16:1 SAE-30. Mine is a No. 104684, serial #572760161. I put a wilson bar on it and has been a very rugged saw. I have always used outboard motor oil at a heavy (5oz./gal.) 32:1 mix.

Always wear ear protection as it will hurt your ears.

Always be very careful around pine trees as they will grab and jerk the saw around if you get into the needles.
