Hey, I was looking for some white and red lead to make a japan varnish for the 1874 McClellan saddle i am restoring. It is almost impossible to find in the consumer market. When you do find it, it is quite costly. I gave up on it. If you are checking clearence or fit i would use prussian blue. Used it all the time in the Navy for fitting valve seats.

Hi Fred, I haven't seen any in a long time. If you're wanting it to check gear tooth patterns, Ford dealers used to sell titanium dioxide in tubes. It's white like the lead, but since it's used to make toothpaste white, I would hope it's safer than lead...Al English

White lead was banned quite some years ago. A substitute is made that works reasonably well. Contact a supplier of machine shop tools and supplies. Fred is right about checking clearances, you may also use prussian blue, one of the specific use products. Besides, white lead will dry,crumble off and find it's way where you don't want it if you don't get all of it removed.

Hi Ray,
White lead is toxic for sure. It may also be banned from certain places of business other than food related industries, I don't know. It's still manufactured though.

We used to use it for a draw lube in extreme conditions White and red lead both have been banned by OSHA and the EPA

Depends on what you're huntin' Ray :)}

White lead has qualities such as thermal stability and excellent electrical resistivity. It is used as a stabilizer in cable sheathing, the manufacture of lead chrome, artistic paints, and vinyl chloride polymers to name a few.
