Condenser tester

I recently acquired an old King condenser tester and have a question on how to use it. It has 2 knobs one has OFF, SET, SER-RES, LEAKAGE and CAPACITY. The other knob says SET and turns left to right. What do each of these settings do? What are the readings for a good condenser? Thanks.

They are still in business and have instructions for their latest tester online. Check with them for your tester.
Set is probably for calibration.
SER-RES would be for series resistance test.
Leakage test. Should have no leakage.
Capacity test within rated specs for that condenser.

I've got several condenser/coil testers - some made for testing large starting capacitors on electric motors, and some made specificially for small-engine ignition condensors. None of mine are made by King. My ignition condenser testers are made by Eiseman and Little Brute Company. My ignition capacitor tester has two buttons and a meter with two scales - one with microfarads (for condensors) and the other that goes zero to twenty (for testing coil windings). One button, when pushed in, charges the capacitor and gives a reading in microfarads. The other button is the discharge button. A good condensor should hold a charge for a while, and subsequently show a discharge on the meter when pushed in. In regard to what reading your condensor should show - it all depends on the make of the ignition, battery or flywheel magneto, etc. They are all usually in the .1 - .3 microfarad range - usually all close to .2 microfarads. My scale runs from .1 up to .5, and anything beyond .5 is considered a short. The instructions on the meter read as follows: Plug cord into 110 AC outlet, connect one tester lead to condenser lead, the other to ground part of condenser. Push down the charge button three or four times and hold for a second or two and take a reading on the lower scale which should not be lower than .1, then press down on discharge button for kick back. To check coil, clip one lead to Spark plug wire, the other to long wire to points, read top scale.
