Anyone know of an inexpensive but fairly well built unit of similar nature.Need something like a giant Dremel tool for odd jobs but most die grinders I see are high RPM(even adj ones).Would like to find something more in the speed range of a 3/8 VSR drill motor with a long nose/chuck like a d/g.

Check out these two items on ebay: 130020292603 & 120024516137. I suspect the first one is an import and the second one is the real Foredom grinder. Notice the difference in speeds. You could also buy a flexible shaft that will fit on the shaft of a 1/4 or 1/3 hp motor. Check ebay when you want info on things you want to buy. It can be a good learning experience. You can also go to Google for things outside ebay.

Bought a Makita GEO600 a few years ago at a welding shop. Guy there said it wouldnt be enough for tough use but I didn't want to spend a lot of cash. He was right. It bogs right down if you lean on it. Die grinding and using rotary files needs power or things can take a long time to finish.

An elderly friend said "Always buy the best tools you can afford" I think you cant go wrong doing that. You have tools your whole life

Dewalt makes a pretty good one.I install ironwork and detention hardware in jails and prisons. We've found them to hold up to fairly heavy use.I think they cost about $125.Fastenal,W.W.Grainger stores usually have them in stock.

Makita makes a good one.I paid about $100 for mine at the local hardware because I needed it right then. I suspect you could find it cheaper here on the internet with a little searching. Its a good solid tool and has stood up to a lot of use.I have not had much luck with Harbor freights power tools in commercial use.But the Makitas do a good job.Now only if Milwaukee still built their tools in the USA.....

I bought one of these grinders for $29 on sale at Harbor Freight and it works OK. I would like to find an electric right angle version of this grinder.

Well it depends on what you need it for. Dremel does make a flexible shaft that fits most of thier products. I have one for my model railroading and it works great, especially when more control is needed or to get into those tight spots. But personally, I would use a regular die grinder on a tractor. I'm a welder by trade and I have an angle and straight head 1/4 inch pnuematic grinders. You can pick them up at Wal-Maet for less then $100.
