Pressure Washer?

As long as we're doing plans for building things, how about a pressure washer? Either gas or electric would be OK. It ought to be way cheaper to make one out of parts than to spend $500 to $1000. Any ideas?

I've been looking at pumps in the Grainger catalog. Since I have tons of good electric motors sitting around, I think I can get a much higher GPM pump setup making one than buying one. The pumps they sell are REALLY high quality. I really don't want a gas powered one. My dad had a really nice unit at our boat marina when I was a kid, it was electric powered. Didn't have to crank up a not very often used motor every time you wanted to hit something really quick.

Something else to remember is that the pressure these things work at isn't the only important spec. It's that AND gallons per minute it'll put out.

I remember seeing an article in Farm Show magazine about a home made pressure washer using an automobile power steering pump. The builder said it worked great, but that's what they always say. . . I've scrounged a PS pump, an old 8 HP B&S engine and a tank for a "soap tank". Someday I'm going to cobble them together and experiment a little.

Hi Paul, I can't comment on ALL power steering pumps, but I've quite a few apart. None of the ones I've seen would last long without oil running through them. I wouldn't want to talk you out of trying it, but I suggest you don't put a lot of effort into the project...Al English

Thanks for your comments Al. I think the guy said he always cycled kerosene or diesel fuel through it after each use. I've always been a little skeptical of the idea. How do you guys keep your washers from freezing in cold weather? Or do you store them in a heated area for the winter?

Flush with RV antifreeze to prevent freezing, never had a problem. Disconnect output hose, attach short piece of garden hose (1-3 feet) to water inlet and pour RV antifreeze through until water is drained from pump and RV antifreeze runs through. Don't need much, only a quart or two at most.

I spent $399 for a 5.5 hp Honda with a 2200# pump on it. Not a monster washer but it does everything I need and is a lot bigger than most.

I couldn't buy the parts for what I spent.

I forgot to mention that I have access to salvageable pumps through my place of employment. That is what first got me to thinking about such a project. But if I could get one of those units that Tyler has, I'd get one of those. $400 for a Honda! That's a great price. Did you get that new? What store?

That's the regular price at COSTCO, Sam's Club and several of the warehouse hardware stores.

I agree, unless you can find a pump at a salvage or surplus yard, you will have a tough time saving any money.
