can anyone suggest a manufactor of a hvlp spray gun that can be used for painting tractors i see lots of diffrent ones out there thanks mark

I bought one from Grizzly for about $60 3 years ago - it has worked perfectly. The plus of Grizzly is you can get replacement parts if needed, something that has not worked well with HF.

I have 2 $30 hvlp guns. They both work amazing! I have painted several Harley Davisdons with them. Finish came as good with them as any bike ive seen. Like glass! Some higher end ones may be a little nicer to use, but its 99.9% the user and quality of paints. I know because I never painted with anything but rattle cans before and got top quality professional results. Finish was every bit as good as $10,000 paint jobs this bike has sat next to. Trust me, the $30 ones you see on ebay are all the same and are all more gun than you will ever need painting tractors on a hobby basis. DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY!

Like a cheep or expensive hammer, one may feel a little nicer in your hand and be a little more polished, but they will get you the same result. I think anyone who poo-poos cheep hvlp guns havnt used one before.

Mine is an Astro, came from my local paint dealer, $175 about 6 years ago. The "scoop" on paint guns according to him is the all will paint when new but wear believe it or not, soon sets in on the cheaper ones and they lose the ability for fine finishes. The higher priced units will have hard seats and valves nozzles or whatever to resist wear. This of course does not come all of the sudden but over time and most people including me, add reducers to make the worn guns paint which kinda works but does nothing for ease of application. The Astro has painted 6 tractors and will still lay it down nice with the paint mixed per the data sheets.

I have about 5 cheepos that I use, I had to build a stand put a regulator and water filter I adjust the regulator to 7-12 psi, works great.

I got one called a Cobalt. Its blue and its a tiawan one from the auto parts store. I think it was about 120$ about five years ago. Its a piece of junk. After yeasr of quizzing all my body painting friends and hearing about how they us low press. and have less overspray etc I was disappointed with this one. Now another friend said he had the same problem with his and bought a name brand I think a Devilbiss. It was more money but works correctly.

Cobalt is a mid-range Sharpe product. Comes in primer and topcoat versions. I have the primer version, it works fine. Next step up is the Sharpe Platinum topcoat gun, which has been replaced by the Titanium. These are excellent guns. Like it are not HVLP is the way things are going. If you don't like HVLP, then get a compliant gun -- sort of a cross between conventional and HVLP. It meets EPA specs for efficiency, but produces more than 10 psi at the tip. If you want one that has excellent atomization and produces next to no orange peel, get a SATA -- $400+. As with most things you get what you pay for. The expensive ones are "lifetime" guns. As stated in another post, the Chinese knockoffs will work for a while, but will show wear. You can replace the parts, if you can find them. I consider that type gun a throwaway.

Get the $40 one that is on sale at Harbor freight. I use it for car finishes and it works just fine.

How can the HF be a low pressure gun when it requires 50-70psi? If I remember correctly, my 40 year old Binks #7 runs about 50psi, and it was made before they invented HVLP. Can someone please explain?

Pressure is reduced inside the gun to give 10 psi at the tip, I do not know how that is done. Some HVLP guns require more pressure at the inlet than do conventional guns, although they spray at 10 psi tip pressure. "Compliant" guns are allowed more at the tip as long as their paint deposit efficiency is 65%.

I should add that the better HVLP guns are set at only about 30 psi at the gun. However the air consumption in CFM can be, and usually is as much or more as with a conventional gun. Sort of like air compressors, look at the CFM needed not the pressure.

I am certainly not an expert on paint guns, but in my limited experience, I have come to the concludion that the results you get are more dependent on your skills than the brand or price of the gun you are using.

I've had a Waggner turbine HVLP about 15 years that I like very good. To make it spray without orange peel I mix paint exactly as instructions then fill paint sprayer 75% with that and then finish filling with thinner. I also let it run till the air is hot, it takes about 5 min, before starting the spray job.
