Will plant oats. Have tried wheat several times, seems that here in North central Texas, the oats provide more forage. Sometimes I throw some turnip seeds into the drill along with the oats. Deer love the turnips, so do calves. Have never tried barley. Tom

I'm going to plant some turnips for food plots and grazing. I'm not sure if I'm going to broadcast some rye seed out and disc it in or just plant the turnips and no till the rye later.

I planted Barkarant forage turnips about 3 years ago and the deer torn them up. Then had to graze them because they got so big. But they play out by Dec. and that why you need wheat, oats, or barley with them. %0 lb. bag is only $50 and will plant 6 -8 acres.

Tom,
I live in northeast Texas, and it doesn't look like we're going to have enough moisture for anything to germinate. We've got mature trees dying in places. I don't think I'm going to risk sowing anything.

Yea, Woodbutcher, it is real bad here. Also loosing trees, even oak and lots of cedar. When talking about planting this fall, I should have added that my plans are also dependent on some real rain, and soon. Live near Weatherford. Tom

Hey TomTX -
Sorry for the lost trees and hot weather. BUT, if you have any of them cedars would you consider selling some rough cut lumber? I am looking for some 16' planks to make a strip canoe from.

Shep, these are local cedars that I believe are called "mountain cedar". They are only good for fence posts and fence stays. Seldom, if ever, get large enough for lumbar cutting. Tom

BigMarv, Have not heard of any worm problems here. Maybe because it is so dry. Tom

Yeah, same here. I'm northeast of Dallas about 50 miles. No army worms this year. Lots of grasshoppers, but I don't know what they're living on. Maybe cedar sprouts and prickly pear.
