Anyone familiar with these? its a 275A wire feed welder made by firepower. I am having trouble with the wire breaking before it gets into the "hose". There is always a sharp curl to the wire. HELP!

Your problem likely isn't brand-specific. I worked for five years in a factory that made frames for Ford Explorers by MIG welding, and if the problem wasn't caused by a bad liner, it was usually a tip problem or weld wire with rust or some foreign substance on it. But probably 85-90% of the time, the problem was a bad liner.

We just had to change the liner on our welder. My son was grinding near the welder with the cover open. He got grit on the spool and it got in the liner. It kept on jamming like you discribe. Also, they do wear out and get kinked etc. etc. A new one was $30 I think.

Hi Spitz,

Firepower is a POW-Con product??? You might want to confirm that I could be wrong.

Without a better discription of the problem start with basics. Check the drive rolls for burrs or incorrect wire depth seat.

You will get some curl to the wire after the drive rolls but not very much. If the wire is balling here then take off the input guide and check for bore wear.

Pictures are worth a thousand words but a good discription of the problem would also help.

Try feeding out some wire with the tip removed from the gun. If that works, try a new tip, being sure that it is for that size wire.

Hi Spitz,

No to lubing the drive rollers. Adjusting the tension is the only thing you want to do there, and if you didn't change it when you changed out the wire it probably isn't part of the problem. The tension on the roll of wire makes a difference but it generally causes only two specific problems if it's not right: Failure to feed smoothly if it's too tight, or bird-nesting in front of the drive roller if it's too loose.

Could you have set the tension on the wire roll so great that the drive rollers pull it apart? This seems like clutching at straws, but I'm running out of ideas. What kind of wire is it, solid or flux core? Maybe it's a bad roll of wire. I've seen more than one 33lb or larger roll get thrown away at the community college where I assist the welding instructor. Also, describe this "sharp curl" a little more.

Stan

The wire is coming off the top of the roll to make it a straight shot. I am using the same wire size as what came with the welder when it worked and it just clipped off with a new tip. Would it help to lube up the spool that pulls the wire through? Could this be holding the wire too long and letting it wrap up a little? I am out of ideas. Thanks for your help.

Had one doing that a few weeks ago, mine turned out to be a dirty tip. I cleaned it and sprayed the anti spatter stuff on it and it cleared up

Sounds like you have the wrong size liner in your hose. If you're trying to run .035 wire in a .030 liner, it won't work....or if you're trying to run aluminum wire, that won't work either. There is a ferrule on the end of the liner that has the size stamped on it. Get a liner that matches your wire size and it should work well. Good luck

Hi Spitz,

Any chance you've got the roll of wire on backwards so that the wire has to come over the top and make a hard turn before going through the rollers rather than feeding straight in from the bottom of the roll? Just a thought.

Hi, Stan, he said it's comming off the top for a straight shot...maybe the machine is built with the feed rollers at the top. My HTP comes in from the bottom. I think the reel is too loose and a loop of wire is jumping over the side of the reel, then jamming up and breaking at the rollers. They may be too tight if they are breaking the wire when it jams. Just my 4.

Hi Slowpoke,

My prediction is that when the smoke clears and the dust settles, your $0.04 diagnosis is going to turn out to be just about right on the money. Spitz says the the wire is breaking BEFORE it get into the "hose." Unless we assume he is describing the problem incorrectly, that would rule out any cause downstream of the drive roller assembly. It seems pretty obvious to me that if the wire isn't getting into the "hose", then the liner and the tip can't be part of the problem. Like you, I think it's the tension on the roll of wire. That's the one thing that you can't simply leave alone when you change the wire, and an occasional weldor might go for long periods between changes, and not think to test the tension or count turns of the tensioner nut when taking it off. Guess how I know.

All the best, Stan
