Wondering what type of band saw blade to buy. I have a Harbor freight type of bandsaw that uses a 64 1/2" x 1/2" blade. I will be cutting 3/4" by 2 1/4" cold rolled steel and I have a quite a few cuts to make. I can get a bi-metal blade with 18 teeth per inch or a regular blade with less teeth per inch. But I can't seem to find a bi-metal with less then 18tpi. I think less then 18tpi (about 10 ??) would be best, but then I wouldn't have a bi-metal blade. What do you guys think?

Pete

I have a HF bandsaw that uses that size blade. I have used Starett and Morse brand (from MSC and Grainger respectively) and they are identical, fabricated from the same material by different companies. What I used was a 18/14 TPI variable pitch, "Matrix II Bimetal" blade. It is a very good blade for general cutting, doesn't chatter with tubing, conduit, angle iron, etc.

These are available in 10/14, 14/18, 14, and 18 TPI.

Go to Grainger, its in their catalog. MSC has the same thing, just more expensive in the Starett brand.

Like Charles I use the Matrix2 and it's hard to imagine a better band. I use the 10/14 and they flat last forever if I am careful about what goes in the saw. No blade will cut rust, torch slag or hard metal for very long.

I think I would go out and buy a metal chop saw. They do a great job, the blades are not expensive.

I have a saw like that(Jet brand) that seemed to break blades too frequently. Mine has step pulleys to slow down the blade (fewer feet/minute) so I dropped it one step. No more broken blades. I use 14tpi and 18tpi blades in a all thicknesses of steel and it works fine. I have a tuna can with cutting oil I dab on w/ an acid brush every so often (cheaper than WD-40)
Have fun and stay sharp.

Pete- I have the same saw from HF and use the 18 TPI for a variety of cuts. I would recommend buying a quality blade. I used to buy the $6 blades and would last a little while then break teeth. I bought a good $20 blade from Starrett and haven't had a problem since.
