You need to do what Rusty says. You cannot remove/reinstall them and have the same setting on the valve tappets. However, when you say you have no manual for it (I&T AC-17 would be right)- makes me wonder if you torqued the head bolts to the proper setting, in 1 or 2 steps, and in the right sequence. Was the head gasket installed right side up? If not, expect further problems down the road. Procedure is somewhat involved and the manual will walk you through it, same with tappet setting.

Any time, and I mean any time, the head is removed and replaced, you will have to readjust the rockers to get the proper clearance gap on the valves. Check your manual for the proper procedure.

when you are tightening the rocker assembly are you somehow compressing the valves to where they are open and allowing the the compression to escape?

I took the whole thing apart because it had blown a head gasket and the landlord bought a gasket kit and wanted them all changed while the thing was torn apart. We do not have a manual for it and do not know the specs for what to set things at.
