homelite will not run

my brother has an old homelite two cycle pump he borrowed, proceded to break,and then brought it to me to fix. it looks like a chainsaw with a small water pump made on the side of it.
new coil, plug,carb,fuel. it has compression but will not fire a lick ,even if you put a little fuel directly into the spark plug hole. could the exaust be stopped up on the side of the cylinder? I can't get at the bolts holding the muffler adapter in place. any ideas?

Joey,

The pump you described appears to be a model XL 1-1/2S. If so, check the following:

1) Find a way to get the muffler off and inspect the piston & cylinder. The cylinder is chrome-plated and if there is noticable scoring or metal transfer on either part, the game is over.

2) Pull the carb. and you will find the reed plate. Pull it out and inspect the reeds. If any are broken and you can't find the pieces, it will require disassembly of the crankcase.

3) If everything checks out, look for carbon buildup in the exhaust. Be very careful when cleaning the exhaust port near the piston. Bring it up on TDC so no carbon falls back into the crankcase.

Some parts may still be available for the powerhead, but things like the pump shaft seal you may have trouble sourcing.

Is there spark all the way to the plug if you remove it and hold it close to ground? Also instead of fuel I'd use ether (Starting fluid) one short spray directly in the intake. My experience 2 strokes are sometimes weird about premix fuel directly in the cylinder.

tried all that. if you pull and pull you will get just a haze of smoke from the exaust but it will never fire.

also could be a stuck or failed valve. If your unsure what the compression should be A quick dirty test is to squirt some oil in the cylinder
through the spark plug hole. test again. The oil will hold compression for several turns of the engine. If your retest with oil gives higher compression, you will know the rings are worn.

do you have an engine compression tester? without good compression... that engine is not going to run. not sure about the engine you have or the cc's but at least 100psi sounds like minimum.

no I didn't put a tester on it. but I am sure it has ample compression.I'll check it just the same at the shop tomorrow. any other Ideas?

what I said above is really kinda last ditch attempt not exactly the best thing to to do approach. I've also seen someone set a comressor at 20psi or so wedged in the spark plug hole for a leak test as a kinda reverse compression test. Also very cheesy approach. Bicycle pumps too. This was when I was a kid.

I know lawnboy engines only have a small strips of metal which are/act as the intake and exhaust valves damn simple. Off chance there are deposits holding a valve open. Maybe try to get some straight gas/solvent in there to loosen any deposites. Could be risky to the engine though. Probably ok with gas if it is kept out of the bottom end. Maybe lay it on the side the valve is on. Of course eval the machine and make your best judgement about any potential damage that could cause. And obviously be certain it has all been purged and evaporated before applying any spark.
