I guess I don't catch on too fast! I've decided manufacturers make every effort that you NOT cash in on their factory rebates. First off, you have to send in every imaginable piece of information. Then wait 6-8 weeks. When the check does arrive, there is NOTHING on the envelope which would make it look important/valuable....Looks like junk mail for sure! No return address or company name anywhere! I wonder how many factory rebates actually get redeemed. I'll bet it's VERY few. Anyway...I decided I was not going to miss this one! My $50 check for my new Ridgid tablesaw arrived today. I am very happy with the saw.

I had to learn the hard way about rebates. I had 350.00 coming in rebates from my computer and it took me almost six months to get the three rebates back. You just have to read the small print. And as far as the no po boxes i had to send nasty letters to the rebate companies stating that I should not be penalized because i live in a small town where everybody gets thier mail out of a box and that thier forms should allow a space for a mailing address and one for a street address and that if they do not like sending checks to po boxes they shouldn't if the person can not supply both. But what really got me was when they sent it out and because of the type of postage or some other B.S. it took 17 days for my check to get from New York to Nebraska. The Pony express could of delivered it faster.

What fries me is when they actually do send the rebate, and the check is in postcard form - open to all that handle the mail..... I"m sure that I"ve failed to get a number of rebates, "cause they never got to me.

Ya I bought a Toshbia battery for $95 with a $95 rebate since I had spent $900 on a new laptop.

I got a notice 2mths latter that there was a piece of shipping paper that came in the box that I didn't send in therefor no rebate as the rebate due date had already went by.

There was nothing in the shipping box besides the battery.

I just got done building a new desk top puter and choose all componets that did not have any rebates other than "instant" rebates.

I hate rebates as a rule. However I recently put together a new computer just to see if I could. I got everything from Tiger electronics and had all my rebates($160.00) within 3 weeks. I guess it depends on who your dealing with.

No PO bx numbers in reply to Glenn FitzGerald, 08-17-2006 22:31:47
All the rebates I have seen say "no PO box numbers" All new towns (mine included) and new housing area do not have home delivery. They have box numbers only. Post office don't know who you are with a street address. Viewsonic still owes me 60 bucks on my monitor.

Put up a mailbox and stop at the post office and tell the postmaster you want delivery. Everyone is entitled to free mail delivery. Call your senator if the postmaster refuses your request for delivery.

The ones I have sent in with a PO box number I do get the re-bate.
Here's what I do-
PO Box 444, 55 Any Street, RR#1 Any Town, Ont. Canada. Postal code

Called a rebate CO. and that's what they said to do.
Because of fraud they don't like to send the rebate to just a PO Box Number.

What I don't like is here we have to pay 14% sales tax on the rebate.
Even if it's a buy 1 get 1 free, they charge you for 2 add the tax,
then minus just the purchase price of 1.

I guess the next step for the taxman; will be tax on the bar code. Tax on the Suggested retail price.
That is, you buy a lip-gloss at the Dollar Store for $1.00 or one at the gas bar
for $2.69 the bar code could tax you on $2.69 even at the Dollar Store.

And we will just sit back and pay it.

"No PO Boxes" is just another way to get out of paying the rebate. Most people don't read the fine print until they get home and much later start filling out the form. By then the product has already been used. I think we need Congress to make a law that the rebates go to PO boxes also. That could possibly stop all rebates. Let's start emailing congress to act.

Slowpoke,

I agree we all should get more involved for this governement to work for us. I'm just scared congess would attach some pork barrel ammendment which would say something like actually giving the rebate would be at the sole discretion of the company or some such nonsense. Everyone has heard of the bridge to nowhere in Alaska congess tried to get built.

Incidently my understanding is that bridge was actually intended to allow Anchorage to expand to the only nearby flat parcel of land which is needed for that city to thrive. Except the issue was used as a polititcal sound bite for political purposes. But i dunno

What I heard was it was access to the airport that exists so they would not have to take a ferry boat in conditions a boat could not get thru safly

Ran into the same thing with Scotts. Bought 5 of their 15,000 sf Plus 4 lawn fertilizer program (20 bags) to the tune of almost $750, sent in all the paperwork, they requested more, I sent it in again, 2 months later I get a check for $15 and an "explanation" that they only allow one rebate per household. Cheated me out of $60.

And I always thought they were a reputable company. But, you know the old adage: "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me."

They will never get another whack at me.

I bought a couple of cell phones from Cingular a month ago. I sent in the rebate forms the same day. Last week they sent me a letter telling me that they have received my rebate request and that it will be processed in "5 to 6 weeks"!

along those same lines- almost 50% of gift cards purchased at retailers are never cashed in. Making them gift cards for retailers who sho 100% profit on these items.

They also will not make change on a gift card. To use it all you have to go over and spend more. This is total BS because a gift card is cash in the till in advance of the purchase, same as cash at the time of sale! Give cash not gift cards, the recipient will have more options and not get screwed.

I believe I read somewhere the return rate is about 20%. I've lost quite a few by forgetting about them until it was too late. In the past it wasn't to difficult to doctor the receipt but now with toilet paper thin receipts and thermal printing it's near impossible. Most of the rebates come from a fullfillment company, and not the manufacturer. Sometimes it's just a post card. Have you noticed how many won't be rebated if you have a PO box?

In May I bought 6 buckets of Behr paint stain. There was a $20/bucket rebate form. I just got the rebate money ($120) last week. The manufacturers are looking for gimmicks to sell their stuff and are hoping that you forget to send in the slip in the alloted timeframe.
