Portable Generator wiring

Anybody have a fundamental source for portable generato wiring. This one has 3 wires sticking out of a hole in the case. One is about a 12 gauge wire and the other two wires are of equal size and about 4 or 6 gauge. This is a 12 volt antique generator/battery charger. Thanks. J.

Can you pop her open and see what the wires go to.. that would help a bunch. You will either see brush connections.. or field connections.. hard to say.. ming have a magnet in the field.. etc.. Can't say much with the info provided..

JS, This is ONLY A GUESS as its hard over the net to see or tell whats going on. If it will run Id take a voltmeter and measure the voltage (if it works) across the 2 big leads and then from either to that 12 gauge wire lead you mentioned. Since theres only two big leads my first guess is those are the Hot and Neutral for 120 VAC single phase. The 12 gauge may just be bonded to the generators frame, an ohmmeter or continuity tester would show that, measure it NOT running n see.

I dont see that 12 Guage as any Neutral cuz it should be the same gauge as the phase wire(s), I wonder if the 12 gauge wire is for + 12 volts DC with respect to the frame which would be the - DC terminal?????

If it had 3 big wires and one smaller Id call it as a 120/240 volt single phase 3 wire, but with only 2 and the one so much smaller (12 gauge) I dont thinks thats what you have. Voltage readings across the 2 big wires and with respect from either to the smaller 12 gauge wire and with respect from the smaller wire to the frame ought to solve the riddle.

Sorry, no answers so do some ohms readings NOT running and voltage measurements running and that may answer your own questions

You might post this as a "Electrical Question for Maurie" over on the johnnypopper JD Forum Board cuz hes an electrical inspector n pretty sharp and current on these type questions.

John It is a 12 Volt not 120. I would guess one is the A Terminal the other The F. Got to do some more looking. Thanks for the ideas. J.
