OT: replacing ac compressor clutch

I have a '97 chevy and the ac compressor clutch is bad. It works, but squeals whenever the ac is not on. My local garage doesn't want to fix it, and the dealer wants $600. Can I do this myself? I have heard that you need a special puller to get the clutch off, and another one to get it back on. Thanks for any tips,

I did this on my 1990 F-350 diesel in the parking lot of the local Auto Zone a few years ago. They have the tools for you to borrow and the only tool that I bought was a pair of snap ring pliers. I could have borrowed them but I needed a pair anyway. Most of the auto parts chains will have a similar program. Most don't charge for the loaners either.

I'll agree with Bob, it's more trouble than it's worth. Just replace the compressor.

I stay away from rebuilt AC compressors. I got one at NAPA a few years ago and paid $90 to have it charged since I could not buy R12. It was empty by the next morning, leaky shaft seal.
Bummer.
I would change the clutch.

You need the correct clutch pulley puller, and another tool to pull it back on. Not too tough, if you could borrow the tools.

Before getting too excited about the project, price a new pulley (as the bearings are crimped into the pulley). They are so expensive, finding a new or quality rebuilt compressor from an on-line seller (try RockAuto), or ebay may be almost as reasonable.
