Went into my local sears today, first time in a while.
Looking for crimp on electrical fittings for autos, got them there before.Well no luck, sales kid had no idea.
And was shocked to see the tool dept and lawn dept very scaled down,no where near what they used to be. No more tool sets like there used to be and just about a short aisle of sockets and wrenches.
the only one round for 40 miles and think they would of kept there previous selection instead of scaling back.
No ne shop there anymore?

I've noticed the same thing about sears, they really suck anymore. Their parts are expensive and they charge you two-three times what the actual shiiping costs are. My wife took back both of my 1/4 inch ratchets not too long ago because they slipped, in return, they gave her two "factory reconditioned" ratchets that did the smae thing. Sears has really gone down hill since K Mart bought them. I wonder why???

I've noticed the same thing, a lot less tools then there used to be. I'll have to say though, i've bought more electric powered tools since they began carrying other brands, because the craftsman brand never lasts too long under any other work than moderate home repair jobs. (sorry, Bobby V.!)

Several years ago I went to the Sears franchise store in the town I was living in at the time. I observed the same thing as you-almost no tools, mostly appliances and TV's with a few lawnmowers. I asked about a set of 3/8" drive metric deep well sockets, and the teenage girl behind the counter handed me a catalog and said they could order them. I haven't bought a Sears tool since; only go in there to get the ones I've got warrantied.

I have discovered that the best parking spots are by the Sears stores at all the Malls I have been at. They are loosing to many customers if they want to stay around.

Our local sears has a good selection. I have bought over $15,000 worth of sears tools in last 10 years. The store even brought the big set to my house. My problem is when you break something, you have to take it to the mall if you want a replacement right then. Local sears store takes broken tool and orders you a replacement.

I found a nice pop rivet gun (Craftsman) until I turned it over and made in China. I put it back on the rack and left.

The same marketing geniuses who ran Kmart into the ground are now applying their expertise to Sears. A few local observations:

1. The Sears hardware stores are now closed.

2. The Sears parts stores are now closed.

3. Kmart is now selling various "tools" under the Craftsman brand.

I'm sure if you looked at the books, the Sears tool departments are not a big money-maker. After all, they sell relatively expensive, US made products that carry a high inventory cost, (relatively) low markup with a lifetime guarantee. They have to hire real employees, if for no other reason than to make sure the stuff doesn't walk off. Contrast this with clothing, for example, where they only need one clerk for the whole store and the products are made by slave labor in SE Asia.

What Sears management doesn't seem to understand is that they are squandering their brand equity. I know I probably wouldn't bother buying anything at Sears if I didn't have to go there to buy tools in the first place.

the sears over by me has a pretty good selection, a lot more than the tool trucks that stop by the shop. i started going to sears tools. com on the internet and ordering there. get the tools in a couple of days. they have a dandy set of easy outs for a cordless drill , set runs about 50.00. left hand drill and threaded sleeve. they work real good.got a lot of broken bolts out with em.
