OT - Arrowheads for Bowhunters :-)

Hey Bowhunters -

Being the dinosaur I am this yr. I am finally considering carbon arrows. Moving from 31" Easton xx78 SuperLite 2514s with 140 gr. broadhead. Shooting Browning Timberline bow at 65# with release.

Moving to 31" Gold Tip XT Hunters 7595s with feathers. Same Browning Timberline bow at 65# with release.

My Broad Head Question is this - which one for my new setup. Seeking real world experience on these broadheads - penetration , durability, flight characteristics, ease of sharpening etc.

NAP - Thunderhead 125 gr
Muzzy 125 gr I have finalized on these two. They sure look dainty compared to my old school HOYT BOW BULLET @ 140 gr, .040 thick, 1.5 cutting diameter. Your thoughts pls, meanwhile I am going off to do more research.

I've used the Thunderheads for about 15 years now and not had one reason to question them. I do prefer a stainless blade as I had carbon blades shatter and break where the Thunderheads bend and stay with the head. I had one shot that completely shattered a bull's upper front leg bone with no damage to the head. That was with 90lb's kinetic energy. Another was undamaged after passing through a cow and burying itself to the back of the front insert in a tree. They are definitely tough. Another that was mangled from a bought with the rocks and still intact. I don't want to find pieces of blade in my dinner....

I used to have an archery shop, sold and used Goldtip arrows. By far, I recommend, you forget the fixed broadhead and use Goldtips Mechanical broadheads. I am no longer involved with them, so this puts no money in my pocket, in any way. I have used many different broadheads and mechanicals will fly more normal to a practice tip. I am 2 for 2 using these broadheads, in 2 years. One buck dropped, with-in 35 yards of the shot. My 2 cents worth. Gene

Out of the two I'd take the muzzy. I use a .125 grain, NON mechanical broadhead. I never could see shooting a $10 broadhead at something when a $3 one does the trick just as well. Good luck, I've been using the carbon arrows for 2 seasons now and love them.

Shep---this will be like asking "what is the best oil to use in my tractor" but IMHO (having used both of your final choices personally), I prefer the Muzzy--I like the tip and replaceable blades--no problem on Elk or Deer--but as you probably know, with proper shot placement, any SHARP broadhead will do a good job---good luck hunting this year---Tim (WI)
