Our ISP, Juno, decided to use all subscribers' computers for Juno's combined "super computer". Originally it was optional for paid subscribers. Changed without notice last weekend. Intense activity when our computer should have been on standby. Then a lengthy period of high activity when logging online. Very confusing as they'd said they wouldn't do that. Of course we have no idea of what they're doing and no control over when they're doing it. Now to add insult to injury, they've doubles their rates and tripled their time to log on.

OK, time for a new ISP. Downloaded AT&T Worldnet. Doesn't work most of the time, has no available techs, and they don't give refunds. Three days and this fish stinks to high heaven. Their high ratings must have been bought. Certainly not earned. Just a small warning for anybody thinking about a change. Save your money. I'm now going to try a small local ISP. Can't get any worse. ;^(

I use AOL because I travel between two different sites regularly. AOL is the only provider that gives me access to both sites without requiring me to have two providers (the two sites are in different area codes and long distance connects are expensive). I'm not crazy about the service or the spam, but unless anyone has any suggestions, I don't see paying for two services when I can only use one at a time.

I use a local ISP. I pay $12.95 per month for unlimited use of the net. I don't feel this is unreasonable to have access to the net. The local ISP provides very good service and I know the owner. You can use one of the big outfits but you'll probably pay sky high bills. A friend was on AOL for one month. He got his long distance bill and ended the service. Seems he had to go long distance to get to the nearest AOL service provider (???) and the whole time he was on line he was racking up the long distance charges. He changed and went with a local ISP.

A small local isp has been great until being bought out by a bigger then even bigger. e-mail is part time, and customer service is not a person. I have to try aol again.
I had aol and could never get on so changed to capecod.net. It was great. Now it's onemain.com and can't hold a candle to what it was. Reverse growing pains!

Onemain.com is the pits!
I had a local ISP that was great until Onemain bought them out, now I'm looking for a different ISP.

I have broadband cable (roadrunner) and I am very satisfied. I have had it for about four months and have only lost service for one evening. I set up a router with a high speed switch and both my kid and I can internet at the same time. It costs no more than a second phone line. It is wicked fast, I've had test downloads at 3 megs per second. Beats the heck out of a 56k modem. A friend of mine downloaded AOL 4.0 in about 2 hours. I downloaded and set it up in about 15 minutes. I have a website for my welding business and I can publish changes to my site in the time my wife says it's time for dinner. IMHO it's the way to go.

I am a semi-pro computer geek. I provide technical support and supervision for a small school district with about 450 computers.

Then entire concept of AT&T/Compuserve/AOL eludes me completely. The service sucks, the prices are all out of line, tech support is impossible, and they don't provide anything that you can't get through a small local ISP.

I have been with the same Mom & Pop operation for 5 years now. When I call them (rarely), I talk to the boss, or her husband ":^) and I get results. The connection is fast, reliable and trouble free. I can't recall the last time I got a busy signal, and the last time I had trouble getting kicked off, they traced it to a bad switch and had it fixed in 48 hours, 47 of which was them fighting with Ma Bell to make her do her job.

If you find the AOL interface useful (Stock quotes, headlines, scores, chat, etc) you can duplicate it with Yahoo or a couple of other sites for free. You can still use AOL Instant Messenger without being signed up for AOL's Dis-Service.

For me, it's a no-brainer.

I've been pleased with Mindspring/Earthlink--for 3 or 4 years. It was slow for a couple of days about a week ago, but when it came back up it was faster than before. I have friends on cable modems and they are NOT impressed. They are good if you do huge downloads all day long, but my little 50K bps connection is nearly as fast for surfing.

I don't ever see my ISP "page" like those junk services. I open a browser or email program and boom- I'm connected. No useless garbage all over the screen.

Never forget AOL is really AO. And it sux

I agree with most or what you said. I have aol, and I would switch except for two things: I work for GM and their employees can get aol for $3/month. I like that. Two, my kids live for the instant messenger. How can you get that feature if you don't have aol? If that's true, I might consider swapping my isp. Thanks.

MO:

You can download Yahoo Instant messenger for free. My kids use it constantly, they love it (I really hate it, because it seems like they're having all these secret conversations right in front of me!!) I just use my local ISP, and it seems pretty good...

You can download AOL Instant Messenger as a seperate function. I have AOL-IM and Yahoo Messenger both on my computer, as a couple of friends use AOL-IM as their chat service. Do a search for it, you should be able to find a place to download it.

My two previous ISPs were AOL (way too much hooraw) and then our local electric coop. Sounded like a great idea, like you said. Sure didn't work out that way. It was too small to have their own techs and the rented ones didn't have any idea what they were doing-or care. Sure I could get the director on the phone. Still didn't get any connection that I could count on. And being a coop, I'm an owner. I was actually told that software driven modems were junk and I shouldn't expect any more. Small is only an answer if you have competence, just like the big ones.

Juno, before the two recent changes, worked great, techs were available and competent. That was a big ISP, working the way I wanted, that got some serious misdirection. Consider yourself fortunate that you've got something that works. No offense intended, but I really don't know why anyone would stick with AOL, unless the chat rooms get you going.

Hey,don't feel bad.I use AOL.It isn't any better.Usually, every time I log on,I get kicked off for absolutely no reason. And it doesn't matter what time of the day or night.I've called them, been put on hold,(easier to call the white house)they tell me to empty my temp.internet files.Of course, this doesn't make any difference. You pay $21.95 a month for something that was originally mean't to be free.Just another money hungry giant.Any body else have problems with AOL?Well, done bitchin for today.

Juno did not realize that some of us don't accept bullying. I bet that a sharp lawyer could make a case of their changing the agreement when some (me) prepaid for a year. Unilaterally change the agreement for which I already paid? NO WAY! My new ISP is my telephone co-op. Great service and prices. If Juno wants a fight, they will get it from me!
