Okay, I am a chick wandering in "man's land" and I need some direction. My husband was given this "oldish" looking generator ( I say this because it is a harvest gold-like color) and we (he) can't quite get it to run properly. It is a craftsman 4 hp. I think the model # is 580324061. That is what is on the "alternator" side (is it all 1 part or is the generator separate from the alternator? ). It starts okay, but shuts off almost right away, despite his messing with the "choke thingy". It says that there is an ON/OFF switch on the alternator control panel, but neither of us can see one (only 1 of us is a blonde). Can anyone help me find a way to track down a resource for a copy of an owner's manual? I would love to impress (stun) him with my ability to get it going. (ha)

Kristin, my cousin has that same crafsman generator you are talking about. It was purchased by his father during a ice storm in michigan in about 1977. It is harvest gold and black and I think it is 2000 watt. It has never been used much at all over the years and it looks new but it has been giving him problems keeping it running this year. We have had several power outages this summer because of thunderstorms and he wanted it to run his sump pump. I did talk to him recently and I think he mentioned he had it finally fixed. I do believe he had to take the gas tank off and there is a small filter in there that was either deteriorated or plugged up. The carb was cleaned many times but was not the problem. I believe it was in the tank. It does sound like exactly the same outfit though. Good luck.

Thanks so much for the info. The carb was cleaned but i'll mention the fuel filter to my husband. (won't he think i'm so smart ha ha) The guy who gave it to us said it had been about 10 years since he'd used it, so I wouldn't be shocked if it were gummed up AND deteriorated. Tell your cousin that his help is appreciated. Sump pump eh? good idea. (as it pours over my house today!) have a great day!

A common problem with small engines that don't see a lot of use is the carburetor gets plugged up with varnish. If you can keep the engine running with starting fluid, the problem is in the carb.

Disassemble the carburetor and soak all the parts in lacquer thinner. (Make sure you remove all the gaskets, o-rings and other rubber parts first.) Clean out all the jets and passages with a thin wire. Ideally, you should be able to get a carburetor repair kit from Sears. With a little luck, you should be able to get the engine running again.

Call Sears main office & tell them what you have along with serial & model number . Sometimes though a blonde will answer & then it may take longer to explain . But tell them you need a manual . I did it last year for an older sewing machine I bought at a yard sale . Good luck & God bless . Ken
