I have a Delta floor drill press ser.# R 9327 cat# 14-070. The chuck has R13-16L stamped on it. When opening and closing the chuck it binds up, it feels like it has shavings in it. I've worked some oil into it which helps it but it still gives trouble. Is there any way to take the chuck apart and clean it?

Thanks,
Dusty

You can press them apart with a vise and some approx. 1 1/2" lengths of thin wall tube like exhaust pipe or EMT. Slit the tube and expand it or reduce it to fit the diameter of the parts of the chuck. Make sure the jaws are all the way into the chuck before pressing it apart, you don't want to press on the jaws. Once apart you will see how it all fits and works. You need to put the jaws back in time or they will not be even. the "nut" which looks to be broken in half is supposed to be that way. After seeing the Jocobs site, which I haven't, and reading what I have written, you should be able to take one apart and put it together. I put quite a bit of grease in mine.

I've had good luck with PB'laster, Liquid Wrench penetrant or other similar cleaners/rust desolvers. Run the chuck in & out a dozen or so times and tap it on a sheet of paper each time. There should be dirty liquid coming out; keep doing it untill it's clean. If it's still rough turning you'll have to disassemble it. I've saved several old stuck chucks that way.

Try the Jacobs site to see how they can be disassembled. I would suggest that you first soak it in mineral spirits for about a week to see if you can soften and remove any hardened grease that may be causing the chuck to operate stiffly. I have found that this is the cause of most chuck problems. It will take a while to soften that grease but a week should do it.
