I've heard of 12v and 24v stick welders, operating solely off car batteries. I'd like any input, and a source to buy or a schematic to build one. It seems like it would be perfect for some of my remote repairs. THANKS

Here lately have seen a tiny wire welder attached to a portable 12V jump box, factory made thing, price wasn't too bad either, thought it would be perfect for going up on a grain leg, or inside a truck box. Auto parts stores are carrying them. Just can't tell you how well they work. Repair tech in a factory once told me he usually welded off the big batteries in his fork lift, rather than cart his 300 lb. welder all over the plant. Wish I knew what size rod he used. John

Carl, here's the url for the site with plans for a portable and an onboard welder. Go to the home page also, he's got other goodies on there (bottom of page link).

Hi carl, I once measured the voltage across the arc of a Lincoln 225 AC welder. The voltage varies with arc length, but it was about 12 volts...Al English

I saw a guy tack a muffler pipe back together on a backcountry 4-wheeling trip.
All he did was disconnect the battery on his Jeep and hook up a set of jumper cables (big fat ones) to it. One lead he hooked to the pipe and in the other one he stuck a welding rod. I have no idea what rod number or size, but it worked. He got a good aim and then closed his eyes for each strike.

I am not recommending this!!! Just stating that I have seen it done...

Mother earth news had plans for one years ago. was made from a lawn mower engine turning an auto alternator with a deep discharge batt. if i recall correctly, it would only work with small dia rods. sorry don't rem. the actual date.
