Installing 2x4' Florescent Light Fixtures

Tomorrow I hope to begin installing the light fixtures in my shop. I will be screwing the fixtures into the 2'x4' openings. Problem is I have not yet figured out a good way of raising them to the ceiling and holding them there while I install the fastening screws. I have a limited amount of help. Half of the ceiling is 8' and the other half is 9'. Any suggestions as to a jig or somthing that could make the job easier/safer?

What I do is to take the lamps out and the difuser off which makes them lighter, carry it in one hand like a pizza, screw gun in other hand, be sure that you have a good battery and or your power drill is plugged in, sucks when it aint, w/screw already in bit climb the ladder and screw it up. I"m an electrician and I have to work alone most of the time and i hang alot of light fixtures this way, but you need a good sturdy ladder not a wobbly one.

Ahhhh Try this. put the first screw in the middle so it will balance , Then do each end. I do it this way day after day at work ( Union Electrician) ! LOL

The jig.. how about tacking 2 scrap boards to the bottom of the opening, lay the fixture in there and remove them when your done.

I put up 2 8 foot flouresents yesterday in the new building. Of course there wasn't any help around. So I made a 12" hoop out of nylon rope and attached it to the ceiling near the one end of where the light will be permanently attached. Then I set up the 12' step ladder at the other end of the light. got up on the ladder and pulled the light up and put the one end thru the hoop and the other on top of the ladder. Then got the fasteners ready and put that end up but loose, then moved to the other end removed the hoop and fastened it permanently, then went back and buttoned up the other end and finished the wiring and bulbs. Those 8 footer sure brighten things up from a 14' ceiling.

Don't do like me and put it up there with a front end loader, then have it fall off and crack the hood on your tractor.

Do what my Uncle did... take a car rim, weld an old-fashioned bumper jack to it, slip a length of pipe over the bumper jack that gets within a foot or two of the ceiling, and fabricate a simple cradle to hold the fixture. The jack will have a couple feet of useful range.
