Iron coating

I bought some new iron and there is a coating on the iron so it will not rust..should it be removed before painting? It takes quite a bit of sanding to remove the coating. Thank you all.

I was just wondering...if the steel is foreign made then maybe it has been coated so that the salt water atmosphere won"t rust it before getting here??? Fred OH

Short answer- Yes.

If it's kind of an oily wax, found on Cold Rolled, paint thinner or acetone should take it right off.

If it's Hot rolled, it's mill scale and should be sand blasted or hit with a wire brush, or a flap disk on the grinder. Mill scale isn't the worst to paint over, but it depends on how flaky it is.

If the coating is oily is hould be pressure washed and scrubed with soapy water then sanded primed and painted.


If it's coated with paint, just sand prime sand and paint.

It is not oil, it is a coating something like a varnish.

Hmm, had not seen that, just oil and mill scale.
Paint might work over the coating, I don't really know. If it the paint quality did not matter much I would try painting over it. If a good quality paint job is required then I would remove it. but that is just me.
