I have a chance to buy a 12 inch Lodge and Shipley lathe. It looks to be in OK condition to me. Has a 4 speed gear box above it and is run by a 3 phase motor, 2HP. I have a single phase motor I can put on, don't have 3 phase, so that isn't a problem. The bed is long, probably can get 4 or 4 1/2 ft. between centers. Does anyone have an idea what a good price would be. The owner is talking $800. It has a chuck, face plate, tool post, and steady rest. The chuck is a 3 jaw, indexable, Haven't seen that yet as it was in the house, lathe was in the shop. Anyway, any thoughts on this one would be appciated.

Thanks to all who responded.

The lathe comes with a 3 and 4 jaw,and steady rest. It is a V belt drive. The motor drives a 4 speed gear box, there is a two speed planetary on the headstock too. Plus back gears. Also V best fro the gear box to headstock. I bought it today, it belongs to one of the other mechanics at work ,(we are maintenance mechanics), and he got it from a toolmaker, also at work, who was selling out his shop at home, several years ago. It hasn't been run since then. The tool maker told me today it was good. As I know these guys, well bought it, will be bringing it home Saturday. Now I need to make room. Oh, my $500 offer was accepted.

if its good, i think you own him money :)
...if i might suggest MSC for a source of tooling. 1-800-645-7270 also on net somewhere. they give you a choice of tooling quality cheap one use or expensive last a lifetime brands. good to deal with. ask for catalogue. even if you don't order from it, you can use it for a coffie table.

excellent brand of lath. try to find an old machinest in your area that would be willing to look at it. generally you can tell if a machine has been abused by the conditions of ways, compound rest and general appearence. see if owner will throw in any tooling he has laying around. i take it that it is powered by flat belts so it has some age on it. thats ok if as others have said about bearings and ways

look at the spindle bearings to see if it has roller or sleeve bearings.if sleeve check for slack.loose bearings are a major headache, you can't hold sizes or straight turn.sounds like a really old machine.parts can be hard to come by.is a good brand though.you pays your money and takes your choice.lots of luck.

If the bed ways are not beat up and The carrage And cross slide have minimal backlash it could be a good deal. But without seeing it for myself I would use caution make sure you see and hear it run before buying it, check that it works in all speeds and feeds and listen for any grinding noises. This is a good brand of machine and parts should be available for it somewhere. If it was nearby I would Probably consider buying it myself
