Have obtained a 5/16 inch drive Snap-on ratchet wrench. Would like to know the history of it.
Was told that it was made during WWII so it couldn't be used by civilians.

A thief is a thief is a thief and he is gona steal. If fact some will even try harder to beat the safe guards, security now days. Now he has a 5/16 drive socket to put in his lunch box that there is no use in taking it home unless he put a ratchet in with it. I really can't believe security was the reason to build a complete new size tool.

That was exactly why Wisconsin engines came with the larger spark plugs.Employees couldn't use them in the family bus so there was very little shipping via lunch box express.

Flyaway Kits Re: 5/16 drive ratchet wrech in reply to Ernie Sharp, 07-31-2006 18:25:27
These odd size tools were made to be used in flyaway kits. The odd size was made for 2 reasons one you have gotten right so as not to be migrated to general use but besides the 5/16 there were 7/16 and 9/16, This was to provide a little extra streath for reliabilty. Now these things were still being made for the USAF and used by them, up till the late 60s,

Here's another one...5/8" square drive, 1-1/16" eight point socket. I2 Cornwell 2R20, hand engraved "Chrysler". It has a thru hole for the locking pin on the anvil of an impact wrench. Anyone have a 5/8" impact wrench?

I have a near complete set of Plomb, 5/16 drive sockets. Have heard several places they were made during WWII for the defense plants, so that the sockets would not migrate out the door in the lunch boxes. Finally had to round up all mine, as I kept trying to use them on a 1/4 ratchet. John in Nebr.
