A while back I posted my thoughts on running my tombstone welder off a portable generator. I don't own a portable generator, so I was trying to buy one on Ebay. I won the bid on one for $454 plus $50 for shipping... THEN the seller sent me an email informing me that he would only accept cash, money orders or cashier's check. Well that should have tipped me off, but I was in a hurry to get my generator so I mailed him a cashier's check. The phone number he provided in the email was disconnected. He won't reply to emails. I called some of his relatives in Ripley, TN and they told me where he works (for now) in Covington, TN. I spoke to him on the phone at his place of business, and he assured me he would send it to Texas at the end of the week with a friend who was making the trip. I told him to honor the terms of the sale and ship it.
Just a word of caution to everybody on this forum: if you see an item for sale on Ebay by a guy named Alfred in Henning, TN, you might want to talk to me before you bid.

Have them ship large items, UPS -COD,You pay when UPS delivers item.

Also buy and sell on eBay,also do flea market, never got a bad check at the flea market or a bad check or money order on eBay, hold the checks for eBay items for a week before I ship. But I have been burned twice by Paypal for a total of $200.00. Don't use my account anymore to buy or sell. eBay used to have Billpoint or Billpay, a good system, then they bought Paypal. Perfect Example of fixing something that wasn't broke.

Hi Jim,

Maybe the payment system eBay had before wasn't broke, but Paypal was about as bad as a system could be. Now it's just regular, so something got fixed. For what it's worth.

Ebay has its good and bad points. A few months ago I put in a bid for $25 for a set of round stack blocks, I was the high bidder for 2 days or so until it ended and then 10 minutes B4 the end of the bidding somebody bids it up another 15 bucks or so. Then a few hours later the seller sends me an email saying "the high bidder guy backed out" I think that the seller bid on it himself to make me want it and bid higher. I didnt buy the blocks for the $25 or $40. If the guy wants to be a jerk then he can keep the item.

I hope everything works out for you. I sell a lot on eBay, and I also buy quite a few items. I've only been burned one time because the item was grossly mis-represented. I have set some rules for myself as a buyer, If the seller does not accept pay pal, I do not bid. As a seller, I am starting to require that all bidders have a pay pal account. I may lose a few sales, but I get really tired of waiting 2 to 3 weeks for a money order to show up.

State that if the money shows up after 10 days you have the option to ship the item, or return the money less listing costs and postage. Leave no feedback. I did and got no complaints.

I also buy and sell on ebay. I don't like Paypal, but I use it exclusively. Too much mail theft here as well as bogus checks and money orders.

another vote here for paypal. you pay a percentage as a seller if you sell very often, but its worth it. and as a buyer, had you paid through paypal, you would have had some recourse. the only bad experience ive had on ebay, i paid through paypal and didnt recieve the item, i made a claim with paypal, got all my money back.

How much did PayPal charge to return your money? I think it's a $25 fee no matter how much or how little is returned.

I kinda cringe when I see how much pay pal takes out for service fees, but if I had an actual physical store, the cost of doing business would be even higher.

My wife and I have had hundreds of successful transactions on Ebay as sellers and buyers. As a seller, we will not accept PayPal for items the we sell for over $500. We learned the hard way how much PayPal charges when we sold an old Buick convertible. I don"t remember the amount, but it significantly drained the profits. We have sold other classic cars since then with prices going up to $8,000, and the terms have been NO PAYPAL. If the buyer shows up with cash, fine. If the buyer wants to send a check, then he can have the vehicle after the check clears and the funds are in my bank account. It"s been win-win for everyone except for PayPal.

As a buyer, we love PayPal because the purchased item gets shipped to us quicker.

I agree with you on the $500 limit, if I buy something for that amount or more, I want to see it in person before I pay. Also, considering the eBay fee for just listing an old car, that car has got to bring a considerable amount or the seller is losing money.

Did you ever go to the PayPal suggestion site and seen all the negative posts? Frozen accounts, (mine included) money returned to buyers who received the merchandise, form letter responses to questions, etc. I only buy thru PayPal. I would never use it as a seller for a "bank". PayPal is a mess. Check it out.
