Many good suggetions. The only thing I can add is, a family near us has a son that would wake up each morning with a headache. It took a long time for them to find a small hidden crack in the sewer vent pipe near his room. Small crack, couldn't even really smell it. Fixed the crack and no more headaches.

Hi Dr.S,

My #1 guess:
Any fuel burning appliances near by? If so check for a CO leak or a leaking vent on a gas appliance.

My #2 guess:
Next how about strokes in your family history? If so take a couple Bayer asprin a day. If you start feeling better and the headaches decrease you best pay attention to your body weight and never forget to take your asprin.

Since I'm certified at Indoor Air Quality, don't mess with molds. Molds can kill you very quickly if you have a low tolarence to them. Outside Ventalation is the best cure. A normal room requires 3 air changes per hour just to maintain healthy air. With a mold problem you might have to increase that to 6 changes p/hr until you get a handle on the problem.

If you even think you have a air problem, call the professionals in. Your looking for a lab that does alot of indoor air quality testing. Once the lab idenfies your problem then you need to find a contractor to correct the problem. Sorry but you can NOT clean this problem yourself as your already sick with the mold if that is the problem and you would just risk more advance sickness messing with it. I would move into a RV until the house was once again mold free. The people buying these sealed up boxs they call homes are fighting this problem really bad.

Room air conditioners:
Again why do we need to condition the air in just one room? If you have a air problem in one room, you have a air problem in all rooms. This takes a professional to indeitify the problem. I don't even own such equipment but I'm certified to read them...lol

New carpets?, drapes?, area rugs? paint? partical wood? Then go get tested for formaldehyde sensitivity.

That should keep you busy for awhile. If you don't make any headway, let me know and I'll dig out the books.

Often headaches are caused by drinking a different amount of coffee from one day to the next.

Don't waste you money on a TV advertised "air purifier". If you really think mold allergy might be the problem see a doctor; it'll be less expensive then buying snake oil.

I like you suffered for longer than I should have from Shortness of breath, regular Headaches etc. went to the Internist, he sent me to sleep disorder specialist who sent me for tests and confirmed that I have Sleep Apnea. I tried to aclimate to a C-Pap machine for a year and finally it was decided that the machine was agrivating the problem. Now I am on an Oxygen Generator with Cannela delivery and am doing much better. Sometimes I try a night without the use of the Oxygen and I find my self waking up choking for air. Point is do not avoid trying to find out why you do not feel well. A good supply of Oxygen is essential for a persons body to function and if some thing disrupts the Oxygen flow then the body registers discomfort with a signal such as frequent head aches. If you Smoke,STOP NOW !!

There is a good chance that you have sleep apnea. Do snore pretty bad and have high blood pressure.

YOu didnt catch a sinous infection from the AC in your tractor blowing on your head for several days in a row like I did, did you? The evaporator and cab air filter are right next to each other and I wondering if there is a lot of bacteria or something there?

dr.sportster,
I'd do a checklist before I spend $500 - $2000.
What have you done that's different than normal for you? (If the headaches started in the last month or so). Eating different foods - Not eating Medications - More coffee - Less coffee - Switched to Decaf - Extra hard work in this heat wave - Loss of electrolytes - Sleeping too sound from late nights - sleep apnea Snoring Diesel fumes Extra STRESS, and the list goes on.
Just a thought, my remedy for a migraine type headache is, a cold cloth over the eyes, and one at the back of the neck, lay down for an hour and keep them cold.

Dr.:

Another thing to consider would be sleep apnea, causing your headaches? Do you have trouble with snoring or restless legs during sleep? They estimate that up to 10% of Americans may have it. A common sx of it is AM headaches, as well as daytime somnolence. Maybe you should discuss it with your primary care physician?
Just a thought. Good Luck

Matt

I don't know about the Oreck but my sister in law bought the Sharper Image Ionic Breeze because her basement did have a lot of mold from a leaking basement and she had a lot of strange symptoms from coughing to headaches and in one week of the Ionic Breeze in her bedroom, the symptoms were all gone.

My Allergy Dr. has told me to not waste any $$$ on any brand of those machines, he doesn't think they make a difference, but that is his opinon. I like the suggestion to drink more water, sounds reasonable, doable and cheap.

Try drinking more water. Dehydration causes headaches.

Wehave one; can tell a difference in the air and very little dust on the furniture. Not sure about mold but assume it helps.

Sounds like you need to seal up the ole basement as best you can to help the de-humidifier. As far as the Oreck goes I don"t use one but I do run my furnace fan 24-7 on low with hepa-filters. As far as the headache goes, when I wake up in the morning with one I run to look in the mirror and the pain fades away when I realize I get better lookin with every day! Oh Lord it"s hard to be Richard....

I"m interested in this one too. My wife keeps talking about getting one but I am skeptical. If you listen to the claims that all of the manufacturers make they are wonder machines. For the price that they are charging they should be.

They had a deal on QVC some weeks back which was about the best price that you could get on an Oreck. You may want to check their site before you buy one.
