Styrofoam logs-billets

Finished my little pond couple weeks ago and I am going to build a small pier- dock. I"m havin a hard time finding the styro logs to put under it. My last choice is to use barrels.I guess what I am askin is what is the bouyincy of 2" blue 4x8 sheets of styrofoam compared to the white logs they used to sell. The blue sheets come pre scard at 16" centers and I could laminate them together with liquid nails I think to make my own logs. Any thoughts?, Richard

Hi Richard,

It's the displacement of water that causes a substance to float.

Fresh water weighs 68lb/cft so if your dock weighs less than the displacement of 68lb/cft then it will float and it doesn't matter what the container is made from as even concrete floats if designed correct.

example:
A 36"x36"x6" card board box would support 600lbs at a float depth of 1". 3x3=9x68=612-12(weight of card board)=600lbs of floatation weight available.

Now seal the card board box with a layer of cement so it can't get water logged and it will last awhile.

Wow, I don"t know about S.E. Texas. I"m in Ind. and it is quite common here. Here it is used for insulation and acts as a vapor barrier behind brick on structures. Availible here at most bldg. supply houses. HTH, Richard

Richard, I was thinking of using it in a metal building I just had put up for insulation....I'll check around with the big supply stores here, we have all of the national chains.

How many truck loads do you want LOL. I have enough of the stuff that you could bring in a semi and not get all I have. In my area the lake of the ozarks theres a new law out that says by 2008 all of that stuff has to be gone and what they now call encapsalate foam needs to be used. E-mail is open if you want more info on the stuf I have or I might be able to get you phone numbers of places that sell the new stuff which is far better

If it"s any help, you can buy the real thing on-line at Overton"s. Or at least use it for comparison. A 24"x48"x12" float has a load bearing capacity of 400 lbs and costs $87.50.

Hi,If there are any lakes near you go to their marina and see where they get their foam from,or you might find a larger building supply yard to get this stuff. Most bigger cities have it also HTH. Jim in N M

Did you dig that all out with that little rig? The styrofoam logs they used to sell as floatation I think are not available for that anymore. They were disallowed on a lot of waters because they shed plastic into the water after they aged a bit. I think all floatation foam now has to be encapsulated.
I'd love to have a nice big pond but all that I have seen have attracted summer resident Canada geese who foul the water. The law won't allow the owner to do anything to harm them either.
You might try blue plastic barrels.
