I picked up a old 50's? Delta drill press, with a bit in the chuck, it had a decent wobble. I figured the spindle shaft was bent, pulled the whole drill apart, everything was straight. I figured out the only way my chuck is held in is with a taper fit, with a flat type bit on top. Is this a common setup? It doesnt seem to wobble as much now, however I put a different chuck in it and it seemed fine, however I dont see how the tapered shaft on the chuck itself could bend, its a 3/4in chuck. Any ideas? Also is there anyway to take jacobs chuck apart to clean it up? Thanks again!

Chec to see if the three jaws are all the same length from the front edge of the chuck. I got a good deal on one at an auction that was like this, because it had been rebuilt, but not reassembled correctly. I see someone has posted a link to instructions on how to take one apart.

if it's morse taper, is it a ball bearing chuck, or a plain bearing chuck? either way, they are expensive and worth rebuilding. DO NOT run taps in a chuck. thats what tap drivers are for.

I was taught to remove chuck and soak overnight in kerosene. A typical problem with multi-use chucks is sawdust.

Yes, the tapered fit is common. Maybe the drill bit was bent? But then I once had a wobbly chuck on a new import press. For cleaning old chucks, I use lots of penetrating oil untill it runs out clean, running it open and close many times.

Depending on the model, you may be able to buy a rebuild kit for your Jacob's chuck. If someone has ever spun a hardened tool, like a tap, in the chuck, one of the jaws may be damaged. Machinists generally like to see no more than .002 TIR runout in a chuck when used in a milling machine. You can buy rebuild kits from any of the bigger industrial supply houses. Most of the kits start at fifty dollars and up. You may be money ahead to buy a new chuck. Jim.

One of the fingers inside the chuck may not be moveing as it should and that would cause that problem. I've seen that happen on the cheap hand drills before and boy do they wobble when that happens

Does anyone know how to get those chucks apart, they were obviously assembled, however I'm probably overlooking something LOL. I'm startin to bet its a those 3 jaws. Thanks for the replys everyone

Can't help with that brand but I know some of the ones on hand drills are made so they can't be fixed because if you try to take one apart they brake other parts. I.E. some are welded closed and then machined
