I was digging in an old box of stuff i bought at an auction a few years back and found this old hand tach that appears to be never used.It is in its original round cardboard box.The tach is chrome and doesnt have a speck of rust dirt or grease on it. I was just wondering what it was used for. I think it would make a good conversation piece, but none of my friends have ever seen one. It has AC type 2 15 18393 printed on the box. Just wondering if any vintgage farmers out there could give me some history on this thing. Chuck Davis, Hebron, In. Thanks

Chuck, A hand held tach was shipped new with the model 60 combine in the late 1940s and mid 1950s You used it to set the cylinder speed on these machines as you used a different speed on oats and beans and small grains you can still buy them new from Napa parts stores for about 40 to 50 dallors.

Those are a very interesting item, and can be quite useful as well. There is some collector appeal, but they don't seem to be in great demand, and don't have a lot of dollar value. Maybe $30 or less.

To be a smart aleck they are used to determine the speed that a shaft is turning;-)

More specifically Threshing machines, Sawmills and Combines.

Threshers are speed sensitive and there was no standard as to belt speed on tractors. Sawmills are VERY speed sensitive.

Sometimes the governor on a combine engine would get out of adjustment. Or need to be checked with a different tractor as the 540 pto speed in the early days was more of a guideline than a standard.

Anyone of a number of other uses.

Your AC tach is a nice unit but I always thought the dial on those was a little small to get a real accurate reading.

Hows that for more than you wanted to know.

jt

I'm not familiar with the AC model you mention, but small tachs of this type were not all that uncommon on farms in the 50s and 60s.

I've got an old Stewart Warner hand-held tach that my Dad bought in about 1949 or 50. It's in the original metal can with a corrugated cardboard ring on the inside. He got it to accurately set the cylinder speed on the combine, and I've used it for various things over the years. Handy item!

Yes John they are very handy. I like the newer reflective beam types better though. Digital readout and you just put a piece of reflective tape on virtually any spinning mechanism and aim at the reflector and viola digital RPM readout.
They seem to be under $100 for those now. Check your governor setting on any engine. Handy for setting / checking Generator engine speed.
